We report on an 80-year-old woman who had shunt-responsive idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). Her brain MRI showed an initial change in the subarachnoid space (a disproportional narrowing of the subarachnoid space at the cerebral high convexities) at the age of 70 years, followed by enlargement of the ventricles (Evans index: 0.31) at the age of 78. The observation suggests that c...
introduction: endoscopic repair is considered the treatment of choice in cerebrospinal fluid (csf) rhinorrhea. the aim of our study was to analyze the etiopathogenesis of csf rhinorrhea, the outcome of treatment and the causes of failure in a developing-country setting. materials and methods: a retrospective review of patients treated with endoscopic repair for csf rhinorrhea at a tertiary ca...
Spinal hematoma is a rare and usually severe neurological disorder that, without adequate treatment, often leads to death or permanent neurological deficit. Epidural as well as subdural and subarachnoid hematomas have been investigated in some studies. A 66-year-old man referred to our hospital because of acute onset paraplegia and incontinency started 3 h before admission. With impression of s...
Thirty-nine patients with histologically proved primary neoplasms, focal neurologic deficits, and positive CSF cytology were evaluated by enhanced cranial CT and MR, or complete myelography and MR of the spine. Intracranial abnormalities were noted on CT in 56% of cases and included abnormal enhancement of subarachnoid space and ventricular walls, ventricular dilatation, obliteration of cortica...
Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is bleeding into the subarachnoid space. It may result from a rupture of an intracranial aneurysm, bleeding from an arteriovenous malformation, hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage with extension into the subarachnoid space, hemorrhage from an intracranial tumor, trauma, and hematologic disorders. If trauma is eliminated as a cause of SAH, more than 80% of SAHs ar...
The increased density in the basal cisterns and the subarachnoid space on CT scans is a well-known characteristic of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Have been described diverse conditions that can emulate subarachnoid hemorrhage, such as purulent leptomeningitis, intrathecal contrast material and leak of high doses of intravenous contrast material to the subarachnoid space. We present the case of a ma...
PURPOSE To report a case of perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) migration into the subarachnoid space at the time of vitreoretinal surgery in a patient with morning glory syndrome associated retinal detachment. CASE REPORT A 9-year-old girl underwent pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for retinal detachment associated with morning glory syndrome. PFCL was used for retinal stabilizatio...
IMPLICATIONS Misplacement of an epidural catheter into the subarachnoid space is a recognized complication. However, breakage of an intrathecal epidural catheter during removal presents a dilemma. Appropriate imaging, a neurosurgical consultation, and aggressive surgical exploration and extraction of the retained piece are warranted, even in the asymptomatic patient.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The relationship between enlarged subarachnoid spaces and subdural collections is poorly understood and creates challenges for clinicians investigating the etiology of subdural collections. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of subdural collections on cross sectional imaging in children with macrocephaly correlating with subarachnoid space enlargeme...
