We study the dynamics of crystallization in phase-change materials using a master-equation approach in which the state of the crystallizing material is described by a cluster size distribution function. A model is developed using the thermodynamics of the processes involved and representing the clusters of size two and greater as a continuum but clusters of size one (monomers) as a separate equ...

The reliability and longevity of any storage medium is a key issue for archivists and preservationists as well as for the creators of important information. This is particularly true in the case of digital media such as DVD and CD where a sufficient number of errors may render the disc unreadable. This paper describes an initial stability study of commercially available recordable DVD and CD me...

A general strategy for fabricating thick, optically flat photopolymer recording media with high dynamic range (M/#) that exhibit low levels of recording-induced Bragg detuning for holographic data storage is presented. In particular, media with M/# values as high as 42 in 1-mm-thick formats are obtained. We believe that these results are the first demonstration of a holographic storage medium w...

We report a first-principles study of hydrogen storage media consisting of calcium atoms and graphene-based nanostructures. We find that Ca atoms prefer to be individually adsorbed on the zigzag edge of graphene with a Ca-Ca distance of 10 A without clustering of the Ca atoms, and up to six H(2) molecules can bind to a Ca atom with a binding energy of approximately 0.2 eV/H(2). A Ca-decorated z...

This paper describes progress towards a first-of-a-kind demonstration of an integrated solar dish and moltensalt storage system, using the superheated steam energy transport concept developed by Wizard Power. Superheated steam is used to charge an energy storage system with a single sensible-heat-storage medium (in this case molten salt), by restricting the steam conditions to the superheat reg...

These media appear to be distinctly different with respect to their physical and chemical properties. Yet the Separation between them becomes more blurred as information recorded in one medium can be copied readily onto another. Conventional examples are the miaofilming of newspapers, or the photocopying of whole fragile books. Modem scanning techniques allow any form of information whether pic...

Data outsourcing services have emerged with the increasing use of digital information. They can be used to store data from various devices via networks that are easy to access. Unlike existing removable storage systems, storage outsourcing is available to many users because it has no storage limit and does not require a local storage medium. However, the reliability of storage outsourcing has b...

This study aims to assess the possibility of improving H2 and CH4 binding affinity to the aromatic walls of a designed new Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) through simultaneous dispersive interactions. It is suggested here that desirable H2 and CH4 storage media at low pressures require narrow uniform pores associated with large surface area, a trade-off that is challenging to achieve.

We propose a new method of volume hologram multiplexing/demultiplexing in noncentrosymmetric media. Volume holograms may be multiplexed by tuning the material parameters of the recording medium (such as refractive index or lattice parameters) while keeping the external parameters (wavelength and angles) fixed. For example, an external dc electric field alters the index of refraction through the...

Iron and titanium form two known stable intermetallic compounds, FeTi and Fe2Ti. exists above 1000°C , decomposing to FeTi and T i below that temperature. We have briefly noted previousl;’ that one of these compounds, FeTi, will react directly with hydrogen to form a n easily decomposed hydride which may be useful as a hydrogen storage medium. Our primary purpose here is to discuss the Fe-Ti-H ...
