Two-dimensional stimulated Brillouin scattering microscopy is demonstrated for the first time using low power continuous-wave lasers tunable around 780 nm. Spontaneous Brillouin spectroscopy has much potential for probing viscoelastic properties remotely and non-invasively on a microscopic scale. Nonlinear Brillouin scattering spectroscopy and microscopy may provide a way to tremendously accele...

We demonstrate experimentally a novel approach for fast light generation based on a wideband compound spectral resonance using stimulated Brillouin scattering. The pulses experience fast light with extremely reduced distortion and small amplitude change. ©2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.4370) Nonlinear optics, fibers; (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin; (350.5500) Prop...

We demonstrate experimentally that a wide control of the group velocity of light can be achieved in conventional optical fibers by use of the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect. Zero, negative and large positive group indices can be readily achieved with a simple experiment.  2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin; (060.4370) Nonlinear optic...

Delaying and advancement of optical pulses using stimulated Brillouin scattering in As2Se3 fiber is demonstrated. Pulses can be delayed by 37 ns in a 5-m-long fiber with a pump power as low as 60 mW. 2006 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (999.9999) Slow light; (290.5900) Stimulated Brillouin scattering; (190.4370) Nonlinear optics, fibers; (190.2640) Frequency shifting

Vector formalism for stimulated Brillouin scattering amplification in birefringent fibers is used to model the fiber as an equivalent, pseudo-linear, polarization-dependent gain medium. Implications on slow and fast light setups are discussed. ©2009 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin; (120.5410) Polarimetry; (060.2300) Fiber measurements.

We propose a novel method to realize self-induced fast light and signal advancement with no distinct pump source in optical fibers, based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. This scheme can highly simplify real application systems. ©2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.4370) Nonlinear optics, fibers; (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin; (350.5500) Propagation

On-chip nonlinear optics is a thriving research field, which creates transformative opportunities for manipulating classical or quantum signals in small-footprint integrated devices. Since the length scales are short, nonlinear interactions need to be enhanced by exploiting materials with large nonlinearity in combination with high-Q resonators or slow-light structures. This, however, often res...
