A theoretical model of the EOF established in a wide capillary after the application of a stepwise voltage has been developed. Both periodical and aperiodical flow regimes were studied with arbitrary pulse/pulse or pulse/pause durations and amplitudes. The numerical analysis performed for a few types of periodical regimes showed the peculiarities of the profiles of liquid velocity and its displ...

We study energy transfer in a “resonant duet” — a resonant quartet where symmetries support a reduced subsystem with only two degrees of freedom — where one mode is forced by white noise and the other is damped. We consider a physically motivated family of nonlinear damping forms, and investigate their effect on the dynamics of the system. A variety of statistical steady-states arise in differe...

We study soliton pulse compression in materials with cascaded quadratic nonlinearities and show that the group-velocity mismatch creates two different temporally nonlocal regimes. They correspond to what is known as the stationary and nonstationary regimes. The theory accurately predicts the transition to the stationary regime, where highly efficient pulse compression is possible. c © 2014 Opti...

We study the Bose-Hubbard model for three sites in a symmetric, triangular configuration and search for quantum signatures of the classical regime of oscillatory instabilities, known to appear through Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcations for the "single-depleted-well" family of stationary states in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In the regimes of classical stability, single quantum eigen...

Both classical and quantum damped systems give rise to complex spectra and corresponding resonant states. We investigate how resonant states, which do not belong to the Hilbert space, fit the phase space formulation of quantum mechanics. It turns out that one may construct out of a pair of resonant states an analog of the stationary Wigner function.

Flexibility in neuronal circuits has its roots in the dynamical richness of their neurons. Depending on their membrane properties single neurons can produce a plethora of activity regimes including silence, spiking and bursting. What is less appreciated is that these regimes can coexist with each other so that a transient stimulus can cause persistent change in the activity of a given neuron. S...

The optomechanical coupling between a resonant optical field and a nanoparticle through trapping forces is demonstrated. Resonant optical trapping, when achieved in a hollow photonic crystal cavity is accompanied by cavity backaction effects that result from two mechanisms. First, the effect of the particle on the resonant field is measured as a shift in the cavity eigenfrequency. Second, the e...
