The JAK-STAT signaling pathway plays a central role in transducing stress and growth signals in the hypertrophic heart. Unlike most signal transducers, JAKs and STATs signal in a number of different ways, both within the JAK-STAT pathway and in collaboration with other signaling pathways. In this review, we discuss how IL-6 activates cells lacking IL-6 receptors through trans-signaling and exam...

Two immortalized human juvenile chondrocyte cell lines, T/C28a2 and C28/I2, were employed to determine the extent to which recombinant human (rh) IL-6, a known cytokine activator of the Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway in many cell types, caused STAT proteins to be phosphorylated. The results showed that STAT3 was constitutively phosphorylated i...

BACKGROUND & AIMS Interleukin 6 (IL-6)-mediated signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT-3) phosphorylation (activation) is aberrantly sustained in cholangiocarcinoma cells resulting in enhanced myeloid cell leukemia 1 (Mcl-1) expression and resistance to apoptosis. Because suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS) controls the IL-6/STAT-3 signaling pathway by a classic feedba...

Interleukin-6 is a potent inducer of acute-phase response gene transcription. The intracellular signal transduction mechanisms by which this and other biological effects of the cytokine are achieved include activation of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. More specifically, activation of the signal transducers and activators of transcription STAT1, 3, and 5 in response to IL-6 has been described. ...

We search for new charmless decays of neutral b hadrons to pairs of charged hadrons, using 1 fb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We report the first observation of the Bs0-->K-pi+ decay and measure B(Bs0-->K-pi+)=(5.0+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.8(syst))x10(-6). We also report the first observation of charmless b-baryon decays, and measure B(Lambdab0-->ppi-)=(3.5+/-0.6...

Hematopoietic cytokines, including interleukin-3 (IL-3), IL-6, and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), induce the proliferation, differentiation, and activation of hematopoietic lineage cells. These cytokines activate the Jak/Stat-mediated signal transduction pathway that is important in the biologic activities of these cytokines. In this study, we showed that hematopoietic cytokines...

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) regulates hepatic acute phase responses by activating the transcription factor signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)-3. IL-6 also may modulate septic pathophysiology. We hypothesize that 1) STAT-3 activation and transcription of α2-macroglobulin (A2M) correlate with recovery from sepsis and 2) STAT-3 activation and A2M transcription reflect intrahepatic an...

INTRODUCTION Interleukin (IL)-6-type cytokines exert their effects through activation of the Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling cascade. The JAK/STAT pathways play an important role in rheumatoid arthritis, since JAK inhibitors have exhibited dramatic effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in clinical trials. In this study, we investigated the mol...
