Sporothrix globosa, reported from the USA, Europe, and Asia, is a recently described pathogenic species morphologically similar to Sporothrix schenckii. In this study, the phylogenetic affinities of 32 clinical and environmental isolates morphologically identified as S. schenckii, from Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia, were assessed by cladistic analysis of partial sequences of the calmodulin ge...

Sporotrichosis is an implantation or inoculation mycosis caused by species of Sporothrix schenckii complex; its main manifestations are limited to skin; however, cutaneous-disseminated, disseminated (visceral) and extracutaneous variants of sporotrichosis can be associated with immunosuppression, including HIV-AIDS, chronic alcoholism or more virulent strains. The most common extracutaneous for...

In the course of the investigations on fungi isolated from human skin by the second author, several strains were encountered of a fungus with sympodial conidium formation, which produce a litmus-like pigment. The same organism was recently isolated from air in the Netherlands; one of the aerial isolates, however, failed to produce any pigment. The species mentioned above resembled three strains...

Ninety-two isolates belonging to five species of the Sporothrix schenckii complex were tested in vitro against 12 antifungal agents, using a reference microdilution method. There were significant differences among the species; Sporothrix brasiliensis was the species that showed the best response to antifungals, and S. mexicana had the worst response. In general, terbinafine was the most active ...

INTRODUCTION Sporotrichosis, or rose gardener’s disease, is caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii and is the most common subcutaneous mycosis. The disease typically occurs in one of 3 main forms: lymphocutaneous (most commonly), fixed cutaneous, or disseminated cutaneous. We report an unusual case of Sporothrix, presenting in a 67-yearold man with painful, hyperpigmented fingernails.

During 2 years, from March 1987 to April 1989, 600 samples of soil and plant were collected from different cities of northern provinces of Iran. Out of the six hundred samples 58 Actinomycetes, 9 Pseudallescheria boydii, 10 Sporothrix schenckii, and 4 Sporothrix schenckii-like fungi were isolated as the following: Streptomyces griseus from 31 samples (38.27%), Nocardia asteroides from 8 sa...

In this study, we characterize the first autochthone case of human sporotrichosis reported in Lisbon, Portugal. Phenotypic and genotypic characterization revealed that the infection was caused by Sporothrix globosa. We conclude that sporotrichosis may be underdiagnosed particularly in Southern Europe and suggest Portugal as an emerging area for this fungal infection.

BACKGROUND Sporotrichosis is caused by species of the genus Sporothrix. From 1998 to 2015, 4,703 cats were diagnosed at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Even after the description of the Sporothrix species, the characterisation of feline isolates is not performed routinely. OBJECTIVES To characterise the clinical isolates from cats at the species level and correlat...

Terbinafine is a recommended therapeutic alternative for patients with sporotrichosis who cannot use itraconazole due to drug interactions or side effects. Melanins are involved in resistance to antifungal drugs and Sporothrix species produce three different types of melanin. Therefore, in this study we evaluated whether Sporothrix melanins impact the efficacy of antifungal drugs. Minimal inhib...
