Summary There is an abundance of published literature discussing the treatment of single-level lumbar spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis. However, the treatment of patients with chronic back pain and multiple levels of combined lumbar spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis are not well-described in the existing literature. Spondylolysis, a defect or stress fracture of the vertebral pars interarticularis, occurs most frequently in the lower lumbar spine and occasionally in the cervical spine, but is extremely rare in the thoracic spine. We report the case of a 17 year-old girl, an elite rhythmic gymnast, who reported with early-stage thoracic spondylolysis at T10 and T11 levels. Physicians should be aware that per...

A critical review was made of the CT findings in 300 patients who underwent axial CT of the lumbar spine in which spondylolysis and/or spondylolisthesis had been diagnosed. Findings indicate that axial CT is superior to conventional radiographs in several areas: (1) for consistent and accurate demonstration of spondylolysis, (2) for disclosing the various changes in the apophyseal joints associ...

BACKGROUND Active spondylolysis is an acquired lesion in the pars interarticularis and is a common cause of low back pain in the young athlete. OBJECTIVES To evaluate whether the one-legged hyperextension test can assist in the clinical detection of active spondylolysis and to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is equivalent to the clinical gold standard of bone scintigraphy a...

Cervical spondylolysis is a rare condition defined as a corticated cleft at the pars interarticularis in the cervical spine. This is the case of C2 spondylolysis demonstrating progressive significant instability, which was successfully treated by anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with cervical anterior plate. We describe a 20-year-old female with C2 spondylolysis presenting with pr...

We report the occurrence of spondylolysis and/or spondylolisthesis of the lumbar vertebrae in five patients with osteopetrosis, four of them having multiple lesions. The case histories indicate that spondylolysis had developed in the pathological bone as a result of increased stress and that it is an acquired lesion.
