Primary Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease presenting classically as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Renal involvement in Sjögrens's syndrome is less common, and the initial presentation with renal complications without any sicca symptoms is extremely rare. The renal involvement may present with symptoms arising from interstitial nephritis, mainly distal renal tubular acidosis.

Introduction: Several autoimmune diseases can be accompanied by dysfunction of the salivary glands, regardless of the presence or absence of association with Sjögren’s syndrome (SS). A recent study by Maeshima et al. found salivary hyposecretion in 58.3% of patients with various connective tissue diseases, particularly systemic sclerosis (SSc). Objective: To determine the prevalence of SS and s...

OBJECTIVES (1) To estimate the prevalence of ocular and oral sicca symptoms (SISY) or reduced saliva and tear production; (2) to relate SISY and sicca signs to measures of disease activity, damage, and health status; and (3) to examine the relation between symptoms and objective signs of tear and saliva production in a large sample of representative patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ME...

an association between the sicca syndrome and inflammatory polyneuropathy, and lends further support to the hypothesis that, like the sicca syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus with which they are also associated,2 the inflammatory polyneuropathies have an auto-immune basis. Our patient developed a clinical neuropathy at a time when symptoms of the sicca syndrome were minimal. This finding...

A 20 year old man with beta thalassaemia developed symptoms of the sicca syndrome. His serum contained rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibodies. A biopsy specimen of labial salivary gland showed large accumulations of haemosiderin within the parenchymal cells of the acini. Although in this case the sicca syndrome could not be definitely distinguished from Sjögren's syndrome, the patient's H...

[3, 4]. However, most of these results had been published before the AEC for SS were established. Two of the largest studies used European Classification Criteria (ECC) for SS. In one of the studies, the prevalence of ATD in SS patients was 20% [5]. Another follow-up study found ATD to be more frequent in the SS patients than in the controls (30% vs 4%) [6]. AEC were used to diagnose SS in the ...

OBJECTIVE To assess the health status and fatigue in sicca patients with or without Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and to test whether the immune-inflammatory activity or the extent of the disease predict fatigue in SS. METHODS The Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form General Health Survey (MOS SF-36) was used in 1 degree SS (n = 90), 2 degrees SS (n = 24), non-SS patients with sicca symptoms (n = 15) ...

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia. There are actually no diagnostic criteria for SS, but classification criteria based on the revised American-European criteria have been elaborated. These include subjective criteria: ocular and oral symptoms, and objective criteria: ocular, histopathological, oral, and serological signs....

Although the ophthalmic lesions which constitute kerato-conjunctivitis sicca have long been known, the nature of the condition has remained obscure. Duke-Elder (1930) reviewed those rare cases in which lesions of the lacrimal secretary nerves or of the gland parenchyma (including congenital aplasia, surgical extirpation, infiltrations by sarcoid, leu-kaemic or malignant tissue) resulted in defi...

UNLABELLED Sjogren syndrome (SS) can occur alone, primary Sjogren syndrome, or in association with other rheumatic diseases, secondary Sjogren syndrome (sSS), such as Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The occurrence of Sjogren syndrome with RA makes it course worse and increases high morbidity and mortality of RA. In this exploratory study we aim to determine the prevalence of sSS (diagnosed based on ...
