Recently, in our group 800 fs optical pulses were generated in a mode-locked ring laser operated by polarization saturation in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We investigate numerically the generation of sub-picosecond optical pulses in such a configuration, consisting of a SOA and a linear polarizer placed in a ring. Polarization saturation in the SOA takes the role of a saturable abs...

A model is reported allowing one to investigate the TCP/IP performance of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) base switch with 10x10Gbps wavelength striped traffic. Bit Error Rate measurements and Packet Error Rate equivalences were assessed to demonstrate TCP throughput analysis in a cascaded SOA for an optical link.

A theoretical study of active mode-locking fiber loop laser using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) was presented in this paper. The effects of linewidth broadening factor of SOA on active mode-locking were investigated originally. The relations between parameters of output pulse series and the critical parameters of SOA and other elements in fiber loop were obtained. 2002 Elsevier Science ...

Optical threshold functions are a basic building block for all-optical signal processing, and this paper investigates a threshold function design reliant on a single active element. An optical threshold function based on nonlinear polarization rotation in a single semiconductor optical amplifier is proposed. It functions due to an induced modification of the birefringence of a semiconductor opt...

in this paper first we try to analysis the behavior ofthe soas in the optical networks and then have proposed anumerical simple model to simulate the behavior of thesemiconductor optical amplifiers. after that by employing thismodel as inline amplifier for a dwdm optical system, we havesimulated the transmission of 10 channels with bit rate 10 gb/sup to distance 3970 km with rz-dpsk modulation ...

In this paper we have numerically analyzed terahertzrange wavelength conversion using nondegenerate four wave mixing (NDFWM) in a SOA integrated DFB laser (experiments reported both in MIT electronics and Fujitsu research laboratories). For analyzing semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), we use finitedifference beam propagation method (FDBPM) based on modified nonlinear SchrÖdinger equation an...

With the advancement of nanoscale semiconductor technology, semiconductor optical amplifiers are used to amplify and process all-optical signals. Inthis paper, with the aim of calculating the gain of quantum dot semiconductor opticalamplifier (QD-SOA), two groups of rate equations and the optical signal propagatingequation are used in the active layer of the device. For t...

We demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) of non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal based on cross-gain modulation in a single heterogeneously integrated III-V-on-silicon semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with an optical bandpass filter. The SOA is 500 μm long and consumes less than 250 mW electrical power. We experimentally demonstrate 12.5 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s AOWC for both wavelength ...

Optical data extinction using ultra-long SOA is evaluated up to 56 Gb/s. The analysis of the deleterious effects such as spectral broadening and imperfect erasing predicts useful carrier wavelength reuse up to 20 Gb/s. Keywords—Optical Carrier reuse, Optical Data Processing, Semiconductor Optical Amplifier.

We present calculations of the intensity smoothing of stochastic light by a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We predict spectral changes of the light that are due to amplitudeto-phase coupling in the gain medium. The intensity smoothing of noisy optical signals with an SOA carries a penalty of spectral broadening (increased phase noise) that increases with increasing alpha parameter (line...
