An open-circuit scuba diver’s acoustic signature (radiated sound) consists predominately of a sequence of regularly spaced wideband pulses each corresponding to the inhaling phase of the diver’s breathing cycle. A cyclic frequency analysis of the output signal from a single hydrophone leads to the automated detection of the diver and an estimate of the diver’s breathing rate. Measurement of the...

A recreational scuba diver wore a second scuba regulator against his face during a scuba dive, attached by an elastic rubber cord necklace. After surfacing, the diver's left face became swollen. Through a process of elimination all other items of scuba equipment were excluded as potential causes. A dive with the same equipment minus the necklace confirmed the involvement of the necklace in the ...

Although classified as an extreme sport, recreational scuba diving differs substantially from other forms of extreme sport. As a result, several researchers have theorized that scuba divers would display unique personality traits but little research has thus far been conducted regarding the issue. Previous investigations tended to group participants of different types of extreme sports together...

Pneumomediastinum usually occurs following an airleak from the lungs, or from a perforated oesophagus. We report on a 30-year-old man who developed pneumomediastinum after scuba diving. The patient presented with acute onset of throat pain, odynophagia, and hoarseness of voice. The literature is reviewed for this condition.

Diver-based Underwater Visual Censuses (UVCs), particularly transect-based surveys, are key tools in the study of coral reef fish ecology. These techniques, however, have inherent problems that make it difficult to collect accurate numerical data. One of these problems is the diver effect (defined as the reaction of fish to a diver). Although widely recognised, its effects have yet to be quanti...

CONTEXT As of 2015, more than 23 million scuba diver certifications have been issued across the globe. Given the popularity of scuba diving, it is incumbent on every physician to know and understand the specific medical hazards and conditions associated with scuba diving. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Sources were obtained from PubMed, MEDLINE, and EBSCO databases from 1956 onward and ranged from dive...

SCUBA diving has several risks associated with it from breathing air under pressure--nitrogen narcosis, barotrauma and decompression sickness (the bends). Trimix SCUBA diving involves regulating mixtures of nitrogen, oxygen and helium in an attempt to overcome the risks of narcosis and decompression sickness during deep dives, but introduces other potential hazards such as hypoxia and oxygen to...

Hemoptysis and pulmonary edema associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use is a known condition, but is probably underreported. The mechanisms of induction of pulmonary toxicity are still not well understood. We describe a case of hemoptysis and dyspnea in a scuba diver who was taking diclofenac.

A case of cold induced pulmonary oedema in a scuba diver is described. This is rare, but with the increasing popularity of the sport it is important for accident and emergency staff to be aware of the condition. Treatment is symptomatic and the outlook is good.
