BACKGROUND Human schistosomiasis is a freshwater snail-transmitted disease caused by parasitic flatworms of the Schistosoma genus. Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mansoni, and Schistosoma japonicum are the three major species infecting humans. These parasites undergo a complex developmental life cycle, in which they encounter a plethora of environmental signals. The presence of genes encod...

results bulinus truncatus was detected in seven locations. in addition, melanoides tuberculata, which is also considered medically important, and physa acuta were detected. the prevalence of bulinus truncatus, melanoides tuberculata, and physa acuta was 6%, 5.5%, and 88.5%, respectively. background bulinus truncatus is the intermediate host of schistosoma haematobium, which is a causative agent...

CA88 is the first long nuclear repetitive DNA sequence identified in the blood fluke, Schistosoma mansoni. The assembled S. mansoni sequence, which contains the CA88 repeat, has 8,887 nucleotides and at least three repeat units of approximately 360 bp. In addition, CA88 also possesses an internal CA microsatellite, identified as SmBr18. Both PCR and BLAST analysis have been used to analyse and ...

We report seven cases of false-positive Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (PfHRP2) malaria assay results in patients with acute schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mekongi. PfHRP2 assays were negative in travelers infected with Schistosoma mansoni or Schistosoma haematobium (n = 13). Malaria was ruled out and rheumatoid factor was negative in all patients.

A case of ectopic lesion of Schistosoma haematobium of the penis with extensive tissue destruction, simulating an early carcinoma of the penis and almost resulting in an autoamputation of the crown of the penis, is presented. The penis was surgically repaired and the patient treated with ambilhar. In schistosoma endemic area, it is important to think of ectopic schistosoma lesion by such a pres...

The emergence pattern of Schistosoma curassoni cercariae from Bulinus umbilicatus, whose adult worms parasitize bovine, caprine, and ovine ungulates in Niger, is of a circadian type with a mean emission time at 0855 hr +/- 1 hr 6 min, characteristic of the schistosome species parasitizing domestic or wild cattle. The comparison of this cercarial emergence pattern with those of the other 3 sympa...

BACKGROUND By means of meta-analysis of information from all relevant epidemiologic studies, we examined the hypothesis that Schistosoma infection in school-aged children (SAC) is associated with educational loss and cognitive deficits. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS This review was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42016040052). Medline, Biosis, and Web of Science were se...

This study investigated interactions among Fasciola gigantica, Schistosoma spp. and Amphistomum spp. concurrent natural infections in Zambian cattle, based on egg and worm counts. In the abattoir 315 cattle were screened for worms of F. gigantica in the liver, Schistosoma spp. in mesenteric veins and/or Amphistomum spp. in the rumen. One hundred and thirty-three (42.2%) of the abattoir-examined...

Several authors have reported schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium in the female genital tract of patients in endemic areas. This work describes tubal schistosomiasis by Schistosoma mansoni in a Brazilian woman submitted to hysterectomy for uterine myomatosis and metrorrhagia. Macroscopy evidenced hydrosalpinx of the left tube and multiple Schistosoma mansoni eggs were identified b...
