Salmonellosis remains an important cause of diarrheal illness in humans in São Paulo State, Brazil. In this study were identified 3554 Salmonella isolates from human infections, during the period 1996-2003. Among 68 different serovars determined, S. Enteritidis was the most frequent one in gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal infections accounting for 67.4% of all isolates. S. Typhimurium and ...

Poultry meat is an important food product and the broiler chicken-related industry is an economically important component of the agro-industry in the European Union (EU). The industry however is under pressure and faces many challenges. Most importantly, there is a demand for meat of high nutritional value and free of microbiological and chemical hazards. Unfortunately poultry meat is one of th...

Salmonella spp. and thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. are the most important causes of human bacterial diarrheal infections worldwide. These bacterial species are influenced by several factors like behaviour of the host, shedding, environment incl. directly or indirectly through ambient temperature, and the infections show seasonality. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the asso...

Human infections with Salmonella enterica serovar Napoli are uncommon in Europe. However, these infections represented 5.9% of salmonellosis cases in Italy during 2014-2015. The source of infection is unknown. We analyzed surveillance data and compared strain genetic similarities and found that contaminated vegetables and surface water are probable sources of human infection.

Salmonella is one of the most important food-borne pathogens. Each year a high number of cases as well as outbreaks of Salmonella in humans are reported (EFSA, 2011). Despite the fact that Salmonella can cause disease in pigs mainly associated to infections by Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Cholerasuis, the importance of swine salmonellosis is related to human infections caused by ...

Salmonella neck infections represent an uncommon cause of focal salmonellosis. While the incidence of nontyphoid salmonellosis is estimated at over 2 million cases annually, extraintestinal manifestations account for less than 1% of cases. This paper describes two patients with Salmonella neck abscesses as the initial presentation of diabetes mellitus. The first patient was diagnosed as having ...

Two waves of antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella typhimurium infections in Illinois totaling over 16 000 culture-confirmed cases were traced to two brands of pasteurized 2% milk produced by a single dairy plant. Salmonellosis was associated with taking antimicrobials before onset of illness. Two surveys to determine the number of persons who were actually affected yielded estimates of 168 791 an...

During 2000-2012, U.S. Air Force Public Health Offices reported 3,429 cases of gastrointestinal infection (GI) diagnosed at Air Force medical treatment facilities. The four most commonly reported specific etiologies of GIs accounted for 86.7% of all GI cases (n=2,972). Salmonellosis accounted for 41.4% (n=1,420) of all cases. The next most commonly reported events were associated with Campyloba...

Salmonellosis occurs worldwide in dogs and cats and is of clinical and public-health importance. Infections in these animals are usually asymptomatic, with intermittent excretion of Salmonella in faeces. Clinical syndromes, which are comparatively uncommon, are often most severe in young or debilitated animals. These syndromes include enterocolitis, septicaemia and, rarely, abortions. Conjuncti...

Foodborne Salmonella infections have become a major problem world wide. Salmonellosis transmitted from fish are quite common. Established quality control measures exist for export oriented fish, none exists for fish consumed locally. This study aimed at characterization of Salmonella isolated from Nile tilapia . The study was carried out in selected beaches along L. Victoria in Western Kenya be...
