Eighteen of 25 isolates of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi were multidrug resistant and contained class 1 integrons with a single cassette, dfrVII or aadA1. The dfrVII-containing integron was likely borne on an IncHI1 plasmid. Salmonella serovar Typhi could become resistant to broad-spectrum cephalosporins by integrating cassettes, such as veb-1, a common cassette in Asia.

Background and Objective: Salmonella spp. are enteric pathogens with a worldwide distribution comprising a large number of serovars characterized by different hosts and distribution. Among Salmonella spp., the number of infections and diseases caused by the serotype Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis started to increase significantly in the last decade. The aim of this study was to investigat...

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi with reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin is increasingly being reported globally. An outbreak caused by Salmonella Typhi with decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility has not been reported before in Malaysia. We present here the annotated draft genome of a Salmonella Typhi strain involved in a typhoid outbreak.

Molecular analysis of chromosomal DNA from 193 multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolates from 1990 to 1995 from Pakistan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and India produced a total of five major different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns. Even within a particular country MDR S. enterica serovar Typhi DNA was found to be in different PFGE groups. Similar ...

In most areas where typhoid is endemic, laboratory diagnosis is not possible due to the lack of appropriate facilities. We investigated whether the combination of blood culture amplification of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi with an S. Typhi antigen rapid diagnostic test (RDT) could be an accurate and inexpensive tool for the accelerated diagnosis of patients with acute typhoid in Laos. For ...

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi is an important pathogen exclusively for humans and causes typhoid or enteric fever. It has been shown that type IVB pili, encoded by the S. enterica serovar Typhi pil operon located in Salmonella pathogenicity island 7, are important in the pathogenic process. In this study, by using both an adhesion-invasion assay and fluorescence quantitative PCR analysis, w...

Enteric fever which includes typhoid and paratyphoid fever is a systemic febrile illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A, B or C, respectively. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi is found to be associated with over 90% cases of enteric fever. (Pandey et al, 2012) Typhoid fever is a noted cause of morbidity worldwide with an es...

Cancer is fueled by deregulation of signaling pathways in control of cellular growth and proliferation. These pathways are also targeted by infectious pathogens en route to establishing infection. Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is frequent in the Indian subcontinent, with chronic Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi infection reported as a significant risk factor. However, direct association and caus...

The genomic sequences of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains CT18, Ty2 (serovar Typhi), and LT2 (serovar Typhimurium) were analyzed for potential variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs). A multiple-locus VNTR analysis (MLVA) of 99 strains of S. enterica supsp. enterica based on 10 VNTRs distinguished 52 genotypes and placed them into four groups. All strains tested were independent human...

We describe the characterization of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, isolated from the blood of patients with perforation and non-perforation typhoid fever, by a combination of conventional microbiological tests, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and flagellin gene and CDP-tyvelose epimerase (rfbE) gene sequencing. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that there were four base mutations from perforati...
