We report a fatal case of suicide presenting with convulsions and subsequently multi-organ failure. Rodenticide poisoning was not suspected until the next day when tetramine was detected in the patient's blood, urine, and food residues. Tetramine is a potent rodenticide with a rapid action and high mortality. The poison has been banned worldwide but is still readily available in Mainland China....
Adult male and female albino rats (R. norvegicus) were administered rodenticide, zinc phosphide ranging from 4, 2, 1, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.125% in the diet containing 10(A), 17(B) and 24%(C) protein. Zinc phosphide induced 100% mortality at 4, 2, 1, 0.5% in diet A; 4 and 2% in diet B; and 4% in diet C. The results reveal influence of dietary protein in modulating the toxicity of zinc phosphide, sugg...
Longevity of rodenticide bait pellets in a tropical environment following a rat eradication program.
Invasive rodents (primarily Rattus spp.) are responsible for loss of biodiversity in island ecosystems worldwide. Large-scale rodenticide applications are typically used to eradicate rats and restore ecological communities. In tropical ecosystems, environmental conditions rapidly degrade baits and competition for baits by non-target animals can result in eradication failure. Our objective was t...
BACKGROUND Rodenticide poisoning remains a major public health problem in Asian countries. Nevertheless, very few data are available in world literature regarding the outcomes of these patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of rodenticide poisonings in our hospital and to compare these data with published reports from other international poison c...
Notable pink excreta and severe myocardial suppression in superwarfarin (difethialone) intoxication.
Patients rarely consult physicians before developing coagulopathy or bleeding in most reported cases of superwarfarin intoxication. A 57-year-old woman ingested red-dyed pellets of anticoagulant rodenticide containing difethialone and warfarin as well as tablets of nitrazepam. Although she presented to the hospital in a comatose state, notable pink-colored excreta hinted at the consumption of a...
Removing invasive rats from islands is a powerful conservation tool, and practitioners are now targeting larger islands for rat eradication. As they do so, they face the challenge of mitigating for potential non-target impacts on native biodiversity that may be susceptible to rodenticides. We report on the eradication of black rats Rattus rattus from Anacapa Island, California, in 2001–2002, wh...
A male common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) was found dead in a field April 2019 the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, and submitted to Department for Protection Animals Environment cantonal police Zurich. Because is protected species, carcass forwarded Poultry Rabbit Diseases, University forensic examination. On necropsy, profuse internal haemorrhage without causal trauma observed, leading suspicio...
Hepatotoxicity following acute poisoning with rodenticides has been infrequently reported in literature. To emphasize the fact that this form of clinical presentation is not unusual we are reporting two cases of rodenticide poisoning masquerading as severe hepatic dysfunction.
OBJECTIVES We documented causes of mortality in an opportunistic sample of golden eagles, turkey vultures and common ravens, and assessed exposure to several contaminants that have been found in carrion and common prey for these species. METHODS Dead birds were submitted for testing through wildlife rehabilitation centres and a network of wildlife biologists in California from 2007 to 2009. ...
