Although pulmonary disability is usually minimal following total sternectomy, the potential for remote complications exists. We present a case of severe respiratory failure resulting from simple rib fractures occurring two years after sternectomy for sternal osteomyelitis. Respiratory failure resulted from flail chest due to the combination of acute rib fracture and the lack of anterior fixatio...
A 47 year old woman presented with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis complicated by subclavian artery occlusion and rib fracture due to fungal osteomyelitis. This followed persistent pancytopenia resulting from autologous bone marrow transplantation for metastatic breast cancer.
Acute osteomyelitis is uncommon in full-term neonates and occurs most frequently in those with critical illnesses, often following episodes of sepsis, skin infection, umbilical catheterization, urinary tract anomalies, or a complicated delivery. Here, we report a very rare case of acute rib osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus in a 13-day-old full-term male neonate. Ultrasonography (US) e...
BACKGROUND Osteomyelitis is a challenging and commonly considered diagnosis in the emergency department. Early recognition and treatment with appropriate antibiotic therapy is crucial to prevent complications. OBJECTIVE This case reviews relevant literature and typical ultrasound features of osteomyelitis. It highlights a previously undescribed and practical application of emergency departmen...
Salmonella osteomyelitis of the rib is a rare clinical entity. In our case, a muhidrug resistant Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi was isolated from an immuno-competent patient with osteomyclitis of the ribs, who was treated earlier with ciprotloxacin for typhoid fever. The patient was successfully treated for osteomyclitis with intravenous ceftriaxone.
BACKGROUND Hypophosphatasia (HP) is characterized by a genetic defect in the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) gene and predominantly an autosomal recessive trait. HP patients suffer from reduced bone mineralization. Biochemically, elevated concentrations of substrates of TNSALP, including pyridoxal-5'-phosphate and inorganic pyrophosphate occur in serum, tissues and urine. The l...
