Heliox, a helium-oxygen gas mixture, has been used for many decades to treat obstructive pulmonary disease. The lower density and higher viscosity of heliox relative to nitrogen-oxygen mixtures can significantly reduce airway resistance when an anatomic upper air-flow obstruction is present and gas flow is turbulent. Clinically, heliox can decrease airway resistance in acute asthma in adults an...

Three commercially available real-time reverse transcriptase PCR assays (the Artus RealArt HPA coronavirus LightCycler, the Artus RealArt HPA coronavirus Rotor-Gene, and the EraGen severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus POL assay) and three RNA extraction methodologies were evaluated for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus RNA from 91 stool specimens. The assay...

Respiratory viruses can cause a wide spectrum of pulmonary diseases, ranging from mild, upper respiratory tract infections to severe and life-threatening lower respiratory tract infections, including the development of acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Viral clearance and subsequent recovery from infection require activation of an effective host immune resp...

Coronavirus is a common cause of upper respiratory tract infection in children and has also been occasionally associated with lower respiratory tract infections. Use of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction has aided in the rapid and reliable detection of these viruses, and thus has led to identification of these viruses as etiology of respiratory disease in more cases. We here presen...

The etiology of acute respiratory tract illnesses is sometimes unclear due to limitations of diagnostic tests or the existence of as-yet-unidentified pathogens. Here we describe the identification and characterization of a not previously recognized coronavirus obtained from an 8-mo-old boy suffering from pneumonia. This coronavirus replicated efficiently in tertiary monkey kidney cells and Vero...

On 22 September 2012, a novel coronavirus, very closely related to that from a fatal case in Saudi Arabia three months previously, was detected in a previously well adult transferred to intensive care in London from Qatar with severe respiratory illness. Strict respiratory isolation was instituted. Ten days after last exposure, none of 64 close contacts had developed severe disease, with 13 of ...

Previously, we conducted a 3-year prospective study to determine the viral causes of acute respiratory tract infections among 495 febrile pediatric outpatients. We collected 495 nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens, and used both real-time PCR assays and viral culture to test each for respiratory viruses other than coronavirus. Here, we used real-time PCR to test the 495 archival specimens for fou...

Specimens obtained from 96 dogs with respiratory and enteric clinical signs in Japan were retrospectively examined for group 2 coronavirus by reverse transcription-PCR. Two dogs were found to be positive. Phylogenetic analysis of the spike gene indicated that they were most probably related to the canine respiratory coronavirus recently described in the United Kingdom.
