Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) are a pow erful formalism for reasoning under uncer tainty but bear some severe limitations: they require a large amount of information be fore any reasoning process can start, they have limited contradiction handling capabil ities, and their ability to provide explana tions for their conclusion is still controversial. There exists a class of reasoning syste...

The yeast endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane-localized chaperone Shr3 plays a critical role in enabling amino acid permeases (AAPs) to fold and attain proper structures required for functional expression at the plasma membrane. In the absence of Shr3, AAPs specifically accumulate in the ER, where despite the correct insertion of their 12 transmembrane segments (TMSs), they aggregate forming la...

The central channel Tom40 of the preprotein translocase of outer membrane (TOM) complex is thought to be responsible for the import of virtually all preproteins synthesized outside the mitochondria. In this study, we analyze the topogenesis of the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor (PBR), which integrates into the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM) through five hydrophobic transmembrane segment...

A truth maintenance system (TMS) is a general problem solving facility designed to work in tandem with an inference engine. Justification-based TMSs (the most commonly used TMSs) have not a sufficient expressive power for many applications. Logic-based TMSs overcome this limitation but are untractable. So, McAllester, or Forbus and de Kleer, have proposed to encode formulae in clauses and to ru...

Truth Maintenance Systems (TMSs) are important tools for caching beliefs and inferences that support search and explanation tasks of general problem solvers. For embedded real-time systems, fast response from the TMSs is especially required. To achieve this, Nayak and Williams [9] presented an Incremental Truth Maintenance System (ITMS) based on depth-first numbering to avoid spending a signifi...

In this paper, Ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple access relay channel with correlated noises at the relay and receiver is investigated. We obtain outer and inner bounds for the IEEE 802.15.3a UWB multiple access relay channel, and also, a diversity gain bound. Finally, we evaluate some results numerically and show that noise correlation coefficients play important role in determining relay position.

In this paper, an interval approach is presented to achieve perfect selectivity and maximum sensitivity in distance relay zones, considering uncertainties. For this purpose, first, the uncertainties affecting the settings of the three zones of a distance relay are discussed. Then, by using the Monte-Carlo simulation, the uncertainties are modelled and the impedances seen by the distance relay a...

Functions of transmembrane (TM) proteins holding 20-30% [1] in individual proteomes are difficult to be inferred comprehensively based on only sequence similarity, which is partly because TM protein sequences of known function are lacking. Recent studies, however, revealed that TM protein functions are closely correlated to their TM topologies, i.e., the number of TM segments (TMSs), positions ...

This paper studies optimal power allocation to minimize symbol error rate (SER) of amplify-and-forward cooperative diversity networks. First, we analytically solve optimal power allocation problem to minimize SER for three different scenarios, namely, multi-branch single-relay, single-branch multi-relay and multi-branch multi-relay cooperative diversity networks, all subject to a given total re...

the design and application of a fuzzy logic based controller to a leakage current relay waspresented in this paper. a novel approach based on fuzzy logic to form the tripping action of leakagecurrent relay was investigated. in addition to the theoretical aspect of fuzzy logic, detection of a leakagecurrent, measurement of the leakage current, determination of its duration, trip opening of fault...
