PURPOSE Since high myopia in the younger generation may differ etiologically from high myopia in older generations, we examined whether education-related parameters differ between high myopia in today´s school children and high pathological myopia in today´s elderly generation. METHODS The investigation included the adult populations of the population-based Beijing Eye Study (BES) (3468 adult...

Experimental evidence supporting the use of a surface-plasmon interferometer as a biosensor is presented. The device is shown to be capable of bulk refractive index sensing (bulk refractometry) and has a spectral interrogation sensitivity of 315.145 nm/refractive index unit.

A detailed theoretical study of composite plasmonic waveguide structures is reported. Expressions for modal expansion coefficients, optical transmittance and surface intensity are presented and used to describe the behavior of dielectric channel waveguides containing a short gold-coated section. The superstrate refractive index is shown to control modal beating and modal attenuation in the gold...

Using Hilbert phase microscopy for extracting quantitative phase images, we measured the average refractive index associated with live cells in culture. To decouple the contributions to the phase signal from the cell refractive index and thickness, we confined the cells in microchannels. The results are confirmed by comparison with measurements of spherical cells in suspension.

The principles underlying a new method of refractometry of living cells are discussed. The method was evolved from the chance observation that the amoebocytes of the blood of the earthworm, examined in their own blood, appeared bright instead of dark by positive phase-contrast microscopy. This was shown to be due to the presence of dissolved haemoglobin which raised the refractive index of the ...

Accurate measurement and control of key parameters of droplets in the complex atomization or spray flow field play an instructive role in the mechanism study of multiphase flows and optimization of specific industrial process. Among numerous advanced optical measurement techniques for characterizing droplets, global rainbow refractometry is able to measure the size distribution and refractive i...

We report a method for real-time monitoring of vapor uptake by simultaneous detection of the refractive index, n, and thickness, d, of thin transparent films with a precision of δn=10(-4) and δd<100 nm. The setup combines total internal reflection (Abbé) refractometry with an interferometric imaging method. A fast Fourier transform and phase fitting method is applied for accurate and independen...

A ray-theoretic account of the passage of light through a radially inhomogeneous transparent sphere has been used to establish the existence of multiple primary rainbows for some refractive index profiles. The existence of such additional bows is a consequence of a sufficiently attractive potential in the interior of the drop, i.e., the refractive index gradient should be sufficiently negative ...
