We present the first results of a new search for a permanent electric dipole moment of the 199Hg atom using a UV laser. Our measurements give d(199Hg) = -(1.06+/-0.49+/-0.40)x10(-28)e cm. We interpret the result as an upper limit absolute value [d(199Hg)]<2.1x10(-28)e cm (95% C.L.), which sets new constraints on theta bar;(QCD), chromo-EDMs of the quarks, and CP violation in supersymmetric models.

The energy flow lines (field lines of the Poynting vector) for radiation emitted by a dipole are in general curves, rather than straight lines. For a linear dipole the field lines are straight, but when the dipole moment of a source rotates, the field lines wind numerous times around an axis, which is perpendicular to the plane of rotation, before asymptotically approaching a straight line. We ...

We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate of heteronuclear molecules in the regime of small and static electric fields is described by a quantum rotor model for the macroscopic electric dipole moment of the molecular gas cloud. We solve this model exactly and find the symmetric, i.e., rotationally invariant, and dipolar phases expected from the single-molecule problem, but also an axial and plana...

A concept of CP-violating T,P-odd permanent molecular magnetic moments CP is introduced. We relate the moments to the electric dipole moment of electron eEDM and estimate CP for several diamagnetic polar molecules. The moments exhibit a steep, Z5, scaling with the nuclear charge Z of the heavier molecular constituent. A measurement of the CP-violating magnetization of a polarized sample of heav...

The electric dipole moment of a magnetic monopole with spin is studied in the N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theory. Dipole moments of electric charge distributions, as well as dipole moments due to magnetic currents, are calculated. The contribution of the charge distribution of the fermion to the gyroelectric ratio is expressed in terms of ζ(3).

Many mixed-valence systems involve two or more states with different electric dipole moments whose magnitudes depend upon the charge transfer distance and the degree of delocalization; these systems can be interconverted by excitation of an intervalence charge transfer transition. Stark spectroscopy involves the interaction between the change in dipole moment of a transition and an electric fie...

In reality, colloidal particles often possess an arbitrary inhomogeneity profile. We present a first-principles approach to dielectrophoresis of such an inhomogeneous colloidal particle under an inhomogeneous field of an oscillating electric dipole moment. For numerical simulations, we treat the inhomogeneous particle as a specific graded one with a physically motivated dielectric model and con...

We study the ground state phases of a rotating two-component, or binary, Bose-Einstein condensate, wherein one component possesses a large permanent magnetic dipole moment. A variety of nontrivial phases emerge in this system, including a half-quantum vortex (HQV) chain phase and a HQV molecule phase, where HQVs bind at short distances. We attribute these phases to the development of a minimum ...

The electric dipole moment of the electron, de, is known to vanish up to threeloops in the standard model with massless neutrinos. However, if neutrinos are massive Majorana particles, we obtain the result that de induced by leptonic CKM mechanism is non-vanishing at two-loop order, and it applies to all massive Majorana neutrino models.
