The primary treatment of thyroid carcinoma is surgery and the outcome depends on its extent. The post-operative management alternatives in thyroid carcinoma include thyroid hormone, radio-iodine ablation (I-131 Na), external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and occasionally adjuvant chemotherapy. This retrospective study analyzes the managements of 153 patients (102, 51), age range 10-96 yea...

A total of 10 volunteers were monitored for radiation doses, whose spouses were given radio-iodine (131I) orally. Nine of the spouses were given radio-iodine for Graves' disease and one for thyroid carcinoma. It was found that the highest radiation dose received by the volunteer was only 13.5% of the annual dose limit for individual members of the public. Hence, patients treated with radio-iodi...

Introduction: Patients administered with a therapeutic dose of 131I for thyroid cancer treatment are potential sources of unacceptably high radiation exposure to other individuals, particularly the patient's immediate family members. The aim of this study is to investigate effects of early liothyronine consumption after radio-iodine therapy on accumulated dose and e...

introduction: differentiated thyroid carcinoma (dtc) is associated with excellent prognosis and high survival rates. this study was conducted to evaluate the influence of baseline and treatment-related factors on the health related quality of life (qol) in cured dtc. methods:this study was an analytic cross-sectional study on radio-iodine (rai) treated dtc patients during 2011-2012. the data on...

i131 is a famous radio-iodine isotope in use for diagnosis and treatment of hyper functioning and cancerous thyroid gland. it is a nuclear reactor product; however nuclear reactor may be unavailable in some areas. replacement by i-124 may be possible, another iodine isotope producible by cyclotron; a system more available than reactor. here absorbed fraction of gamma and beta rays of i-124 thro...

We report a patient with pulmonary and bony metastases due to follicular carcinoma of the thyroid, occurring 12 years after the initial diagnosis. This was brought to light by worsening diabetic control due to thyrotoxicosis from functioning malignant thyroid tissue. Following radio-active iodine therapy, she remains well with good control of her diabetes.

AIMS To evaluate the iodine status of patients in early pregnancy and its dependence on level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). METHODS Between June 2005 and December 2006, 168 patients with a confirmed vital pregnancy (up to 10(th) week of pregnancy) were included in the study. The entry criteria were no prior thyroid disease, did not take any other medication, had not undergone radio-io...

PURPOSE Treatment options in Graves' disease are clearly defined, but management practices and the perceptions of success are varied. The outcomes of treatment in large consecutive cohorts of Graves' disease have not been well characterised. The study describes the epidemiology, management strategies and medium term outcomes following anti-thyroid drug treatment, radio-iodine ablation and surge...

Radioactive iodine has proved itself a most useful tool in the assessment of thyroid function and since its introduction in 1938 by Hertz, Roberts, and Evans (1) a voluminous literature on this subject has developed, much of which has been well summarized by Skanse (2) in his monograph. Although various workers have noted that there is a delayed excretion of the isotope in renal disease which p...

radioactive iodine therapy is commonly used as an adjuvant therapy in follicular and papillary thyroid carcinoma and also in the treatment of graves’ disease. the basis of which is the accumulation of radioactive iodine by the sodium-iodide symporter (nis) in the thyroid gland. expression of nis by extrathyroidal tissues including islets of pancreas has been reported. radioactive iodine uptake ...
