Pseudomonas stutzeri is a nonfluorescent denitrifying bacterium widely distributed in the environment, and it has also been isolated as an opportunistic pathogen from humans. Over the past 15 years, much progress has been made in elucidating the taxonomy of this diverse taxonomical group, demonstrating the clonality of its populations. The species has received much attention because of its part...
In this study we report the presence of a functional hydroxyectoine biosynthesis gene cluster ectABCD/ask in Pseudomonas stutzeri type strain DSM5190 T and evaluate the suitability of P. stutzeri DSM5190 T for hydroxyectoine production. Furthermore we present heterologous de novo production of the compatible solute hydroxyectoine in Escherichia coli. In this host the P. stutzeri gene cluster re...
A bacterial isolate capable of utilizing tributyltin chloride (TBTCl) as sole carbon source was isolated from estuarine sediments of west coast of India and identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri based on biochemical tests and Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis. This isolate was designated as strain DN2. Although this bacterial isolate could resist up to 3 mM TBTCl level, it showed maximum gro...
Pseudomonas stutzeri (P. stutzeri) is a Gram-negative, non-fermenting rod. It is a rare pathogen; therefore, its isolation is often associated with colonization or contamination. We herein describe the first reported case of necrotizing pneumonia caused by P. stutzeri in a non-HIV infected patient with previously undiagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. The isolate was found to be antibiotic resista...
Pseudomonas stutzeri strain B1SMN1 is a naphthalene-degrading and simultaneously nitrogen-fixing strain isolated from a wastewater sample taken at a lagooning treatment plant in Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Here we report the draft genome sequence of P. stutzeri B1SMN1. It is composed of a chromosome of an estimated size of 5.2 Mb and two plasmids of 44,324 bp and 56,118 bp.
A comparison was made of denitrification by Pseudomonas stutzeri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Paracoccus denitrificans. Although all three organisms reduced nitrate to dinitrogen gas, they did so at different rates and accumulated different kinds and amounts of intermediates. Their rates of anaerobic growth on nitrate varied about 1.5-fold; concomitant gas production varied more than 8-fold. Ce...
Strains of Pseudomonas stutzeri (CINNS) and Pseudomonas putida (CINNP and CINNW) isolated from soil with cinnamic acid as the sole carbon source were found to be simultaneously adapted to grow on phenylpropionic and p-hydroxybenzoic acids. In cinnamic acid-grown cultures, phenylpropionic acid was isolated. A catabolic plasmid of approximately equal to 75 kilobase pairs encoding the metabolism o...
In this study, the growth of sixty-one bacterial strains in crude oil were determined spectrophotometrically at 620 nm. Pseudomonas aeruginosa G1, Pseudomonas fluorescens G6, Pseudomonas stutzeri G11 and Pseudomonas putida G15 were chosen for the study based on the efficiency of crude oil utilisation. At 1% (v/v) crude oil concentration, P. stutzeri G11 strain degraded a maximum of 69%. The per...
Pseudomonas sp. strain KC (= ATCC 55595 = DSM 7136) is a denitrifying aquifer isolate that produces and secretes pyridine-2,6-bis(thiocarboxylate) (PDTC), a chelating agent that fortuitously transforms carbon tetrachloride without producing chloroform. Although KC has been used successfully for full-scale bioremediation of carbon tetrachloride, its taxonomy has proven difficult to resolve, as i...
A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped, dissimilatory chlorate-reducing bacterium, strain AW-1(T), was isolated from biomass of an anaerobic chlorate-reducing bioreactor. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence showed 100% sequence similarity to Pseudomonas stutzeri DSM 50227 and 98.6% sequence similarity to the type strain of P. stutzeri (DSM 5190(T)). The species P. stutz...
