Ethanolic extracts of six Indian medicinal plants, piperine, guggulsterone E and guggulsterone Z were tested for cytotoxicity using brine shrimp lethality test. Piper longum showed most potent cytotoxic activity. Piperine, guggulsterone E and guggulsterone Z showed potent activity with LC(50) 2.4, 8.9 and 4.9, respectively.
Thailand is located in the tropical rain forest zone above the equator. This geographically supports very rich biodiversity, including the genus Piper (Piperaceae). Thirtyeight species of Piper, from out of over 1,000 species in the world, have been discovered recently (1998-2006) by the authors. Plant morphology and plant use information were recorded via observation, market surveys, and inter...
Piper longum root, commonly called Kandantippili, is traditionally used to treat rheumatism, insomnia, palsy and epilepsy. But a scientific study on its central actions is not available. This study screens P. longum root for opioid type analgesia using rat tail-flick method and for NSAID type analgesia using acetic-acid writhing method. Pentazocine (ip) and ibuprofen (oral) are used as respecti...
In this study the attempt was made to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of various solvent extracts of fruit of Piper longum L. against different gram positive and gram negative bacteria by using disk diffusion method. The petroleum ether extract was resistant towards all the tested bacterial strains while ethyl acetate was highly active. Among all the gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus au...
The scientists at ALMPG Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Madras, Chennai, India evaluated a combination of spices (Piper nigrum Linn., P. longum Linn. and Zingiber officinale Rosc.), herbs (Cyperus rotundus Linn. and Plumbago zeylanica Linn.) and salts make up Amrita Bindu for its possible antioxidant activity. The study was focused to evaluate the antioxidant property of indi...
Present study reports CNS depressant and analgesic activities of methanol extract obtained from the leaves of Piper longum L (MEPL). CNS depressant activity was evaluated by using open field and hole cross tests at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight while peripheral analgesic activity was evaluated by using acetic acid induced writhing method and formalin test respectively in rat model at 1...
Preventive potentials of piperlongumine and a Piper longum extract against stress responses and pain
AIM To compare stress resistance increasing and analgesic activities of piperlongumine and a methanolic Piper longum fruit extract (PLE). METHODS Efficacies of a single and repeated daily oral doses (1-256 mg/kg/day) of PLE, piperlongumine, and 50 mg/kg/day doxycycline against foot shock stress triggered alteration in body weights and core temperatures, and of their 11 daily doses on antidepr...
