Human CD8 is a T cell coreceptor, which binds to pHLA I and plays a pivotal role in the activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Soluble recombinant CD8 aa has been shown to antagonize T cell activation, both in vitro and in vivo. However, because of a very low affinity for pHLA I, high concentrations of soluble CD8 aa are required for efficient inhibition. Based upon our knowledge of the wild-ty...
Photorhabdus is an entomopathogenic bacterium symbiotically associated with nematodes of the family Heterorhabditidae. Bacterial hemolysins found in numerous pathogenic bacteria are often virulence factors. We describe here the nucleotide sequence and the molecular characterization of the Photorhabdus luminescens phlBA operon, a locus encoding a hemolysin which shows similarities to the Serrati...
The performance of Pseudomonas biocontrol agents may be improved by applying mixtures of strains which are complementary in their capacity to suppress plant diseases. Here, we have chosen the combination of Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 with another well-characterized biocontrol agent, P. fluorescens Q2-87, as a model to study how these strains affect each other's expression of a biocontrol trai...
Previous analysis of chick embryonic muscle (CEM) differentiation in vivo and in ovo demonstrated that lamin A accumulation to steady-state levels preceded the accumulation of muscle-specific proteins. These observations have suggested the appearance of A-type lamins may be important for differentiation. To test this hypothesis, we have temporally and quantitatively altered the expression of A-...
In oceans, the limited acoustic spectrum resource is heavily shared by marine mammals and manmade systems including underwater sensor networks. In order to limit the negative impact of acoustic signal on marine mammals, we propose an environmentally friendly power control (EFPC) scheme for underwater sensor networks. EFPC allocates transmission power of sensor nodes with a consideration of the ...
Members of the Killer Immunoglobulin-Like Receptor (KIR) family, a large group of polymorphic receptors expressed on Natural Killer (NK) cells, recognise particular peptide-laden Human Leukocyte Antigen (pHLA) class I molecules and play a pivotal role in innate immune responses1. Allelic variation and extensive polymorphism within the three-domain KIR family (KIR3D, domains D0–D1–D2) affects pH...
Triglyceride metabolism was investigated in groups of fed and fasted rats after 21 days of parenteral estradiol (5 mug daily), progesterone (5 mg daily), or the two steroids in combination. Results were compared with control groups receiving an oil solvent alone. In rats given estradiol separately or combined with progesterone, hypertriglyceridemia was uniformly associated with increased plasma...
A quantitative competitive PCR (QC-PCR) assay targeting the phlA gene of Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 was developed and tested in vitro. Statistically significant, positive correlations were found between QC-PCR and both CFU and total cell number when studying cells in log or stationary phase. The correlations disappeared when considering stressed cells.
The plasma lipolysis of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins is mainly due to the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Albeit important for our analysis of certain physiopathological situations, the determination of the magnitude of LPL-dependent lipolysis is not easy to perform. This essentially results from the binding of LPL to the luminal surface of vascular endothelium. The measurements of...
