The molecular mechanism of action of the antitumor drug, methylthioinosine periodate oxidation product, was demon strated. This periodate oxidation product (methylthioinosinedicarboxaldehyde) inhibited bovine pancreatic ribonuclease A. The inhibition was due to Schiffs base formation with e-amino groups of lysine residues, one of which was in close proximity to the catalytic center of the enzyme.

The efficient and selective partial oxidation of light alkanes using potassium periodate and potassium chloride is reported. Yields of methane functionalization in trifluoroacetic acid reach >40% with high selectivity for methyl trifluoroacetate.
