BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The emergence of resistance to fluoroquinolones in enteric fever despite the pathogen being susceptible by in vitro laboratory results, led to repeated changes in Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) guidelines for this class of antibiotics to have specific and sensitive interpretative criteria. In 2015, CLSI added pefloxacin disk diffusion criteria as a sur...

Ten patients who had undergone laparotomies for different abdominal pathological conditions were studied to determine the levels of pefloxacin in mesenteric lymph nodes. Each patient was given 400 mg of oral pefloxacin every 12 h for the 3 days prior to surgery. Drug levels in tissue were determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography (reverse phase); the mean +/- standard deviation was 17.1...

BACKGROUND Gold nanoparticles are useful candidate for drug delivery applications and are associated with enhancement in the bioavailability of coated drugs and/or therapeutic agent. Since, heterocyclic compounds are known to exhibit antimicrobial potential against variety of pathogens, we designed this study to evaluate the antibacterial effects of gold nanoparticles conjugation with new synth...

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), a widely used replacement therapy for end stage renal failure, is frequently complicated by bacterial peritonitis. The infecting organisms are mainly staphylococci and gram negative aerobes. Pefloxacin is a fluorinated quinolone with good in-vitro activity against these pathogens. The objective of this open non comparative study is to determine ...

In a prospective open randomized trial, pefloxacin was given to 53 patients and ceftazidime was given to 50 patients suffering from bronchopneumonia (n = 29), deep soft tissue infection (n = 19), urinary tract infection (n = 28), chronic osteomyelitis in exacerbation (n = 15), chronic otitis media in exacerbation (n = 3), malignant external otitis (n = 3), abdominal abscess (n = 2), septic arth...

A 2-month clinical trial of pefloxacin and ofloxacin in previously untreated multibacillary patients was conducted at the Leonard Wood Memorial Leprosy Research Center, Cebu, the Philippines. Treatment with either pefloxacin or ofloxacin resulted in rapid clinical improvement, in this regard pefloxacin appearing somewhat superior. Reactions and side effects were minimal. Single doses of either ...

BACKGROUND Schnitzler syndrome is characterized by chronic urticarial rash and monoclonal IgM gammopathy and is sometimes associated with periodic fever, arthralgias, and bone pain. Current treatment is unsatisfactory. OBSERVATIONS Eleven patients with Schnitzler syndrome were treated with oral pefloxacin mesylate (800 mg/d). In 10 patients, we observed a dramatic and sustained improvement of...

We compared the prophylactic activities of six fluoroquinolones against Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in immunosuppressed rats. Pefloxacin was the only agent which was as effective as the reference drug trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Clinical trials with pefloxacin in patients at risk for P. carinii pneumonia appear to be justified.

Irloxacin and E-3846 are two new fluorinated quinolones. We evaluated the activities of these antimicrobial agents, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, enoxacin, pefloxacin, norfloxacin, and nalidixic acid against 1,161 bacterial strains. Ciprofloxacin was the most active quinolone. Irloxacin did not show great activity. The activity of E-3846 against gram-negative bacteria was similar to those of ofloxa...

We investigated the in vivo antimalarial activities of pefloxacin and ciprofloxacin in Swiss albino mice infected intravenously with 5 x 10(6) Plasmodium yoelii N67 parasites 1 h before treatment. Groups of 20 mice received a subcutaneous injection of 40, 80, or 160 mg of ciprofloxacin or pefloxacin per kg of body weight every 8 h for 3 days. Parasitologic activity was assessed on day 4, and su...
