In order to state our theorems we need to view the Seiberg-Witten invariant of a smooth 4manifold as a multivariable (Laurent) polynomial. To do this, recall that the Seiberg-Witten invariant of a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold X with b2 (X) > 1 is an integer valued function which is defined on the set of spin c structures over X, (cf. [W], [KM],[Ko1],[T1]). In caseH1(X,Z) has no 2-torsion (...

In much of his research on intergenerational value change, Inglehart uses a four-item index to calculate levels of postmaterial and material value orientations. Latter waves of the World Values Surveys administer a 12-item values index in which the original four-item index is embedded. In some of his research, Inglehart compares values estimated from stand-alone and embedded indices. Using a sp...

Does the cultural background influence the success with which genetically unrelated individuals cooperate in social dilemma situations? In this paper, we provide an answer by analysing the data of Herrmann et al. (2008a), who studied cooperation and punishment in 16 subject pools from six different world cultures (as classified by Inglehart & Baker (2000)). We use analysis of variance to disent...

The British race can claim with every truth that it has conferred many benefits upon this country; had it conferred no other than the gift of western medicine, the people of the sub-continent might still rise up and call it blessed. Of all the blessings which western medicine has been able to confer, none are surpassed by those which originate from the work of Sir Ronald Ross, k.c.b., k.c.m.g.,...

A fundamental problem facing the worldwide process of democratization is the continued lack of gender equality in political leadership. The basic facts are not in dispute: Today women represent only one in seven parliamentarians, one in ten cabinet ministers, and, at the apex of power, one in 20 heads of state or government. Multiple factors have contributed to this situation, including structu...

A posteriori error estimates for the obstacle problem are established in the framework of the hypercircle method. To this end, we provide a general theorem of Prager– Synge type. There is now no generic constant in the main term of the estimate. Moreover, the role of edge terms is elucidated, and the analysis also applies to other types of a posteriori error estimators for obstacle problems.
