Vibrio harveyi is a Gram-negative bacterium found in tropical and temperate marine environments as a free-living organism or in association with aquatic animals. We report the first sequenced genome of a Vibrio harveyi strain, CAIM 1792, the etiologic agent of the "bright red" syndrome of the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei.

The uses of breeding programs for the Pacific white shrimp [Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei] based on mixed linear models with pedigreed data are described. The application of these classic breeding methods yielded continuous progress of great value to increase the profitability of the shrimp industry in several countries. Recent advances in such areas as genomics in shrimp will allow for the de...

An eleven-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the growth effect of partial replacement of fishmeal by the microalga Spirulina platensis in the diet of juvenile Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone). The results clearly indicate that Spirulina platensis constitutes an effective food ingredient for shrimp. Growth rates of a Spirulina-fed group differed highly significantly (p...

The effect of five isonitrogenous diets (36.6% protein), formulated by replacing 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of fish meal (FM) with rice protein concentrate (RPC), was investigated on the growth and tail-muscle fatty acid (FA) quality of juvenile Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. The feeds were fed to shrimp (initial weight of 6.99 ± 0.08 g) five times daily to apparent satiation for 60 d...

Structural changes in Midwest agriculture over the past two decades have resulted in a number of empty and unused farm buildings. Farmers therefore have been exploring alternative uses of livestock farm buildings for the production of other cash crops, including aquaculture products. In Indiana, Pacific White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) production has attracted interest, and a number of small...

A shrimp Pacific White shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei growth performance study during summer (S) and monsoon (M) was taken up for 120 days. The stocking density was 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80pc/m2 in six different treatments with three replicate. Experiment was conducted in 18 commercial culture pond having 0.5 ha size. The initial average body weight of shrimp post larvae during summer and monsoo...

This short-term study evaluated the effect of non-lethal high CO2 concentration on transcriptional response immune-related genes Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultured in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Two experimental groups were created: (47.67±2.04 mg L−1) and low (2.0±1.93 L−1). Shrimp 8.85±1.20 g placed randomly at a density equivalent to 100 individuals m−3 monitor...

The Black Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) has a natural distribution range from East Africa to the South Pacific Islands. Although previous studies of Indo-Pacific P. monodon have found populations from the Indian Ocean and Australasia to differ genetically, their relatedness to South Pacific shrimp remains unknown. To address this, polymorphisms at eight shared microsatellite loci and haplotype...

three different experiments were conducted to study the effect of dietary astaxanthin on the immune response, resistance to white spot syndrome virus (wssv) and transcription of antioxidant enzyme genes in pacific white shrimp litopenaeus vannamei. each experiment included one triplicate treatment group (fed with 80 mg/kg astaxanthin supplemented diet) and one triplicate control group (fed with...

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) on growth performance, gut morphology, and NH(3) stress tolerance of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Juvenile Pacific white shrimp (1080 individuals with initial weight of 2.52 ± 0.01 g) were fed either control diet without MOS or one of five dietary MOS (1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 and 8....
