On the basis of ab initio calculations we propose a revised mechanism for the reaction of organic sulfides with singlet oxygen, which is more consistent with experimental evidence than previous schemes. In aprotic solvents the reagents initially form a weakly bound peroxysulfoxide, with a small barrier due to entropy. The peroxysulfoxide may decay back to ground state (triplet) oxygen, be trapp...

Seasonal variation in trace metal contamination in surface sediments was studied through high resolution profiles assessed monthly by DGT probes in muddy sediments of the North Sea. General parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen and sulfides were also recorded to estimate their role in the speciation of trace metals. Experimental data were included in a thermodynamic equilibrium m...

After exposing intact chloroplasts isolated from spinach (Spinacia oleracea L. cv Yates) and capable of photoreducing CO(2) at high rates to different concentrations of radioactive sulfite in the light or in the dark, (35)SO(2) and H(2) (35)S were removed from the acidified suspensions in a stream of nitrogen. Remaining activity could be fractionated into sulfate, organic sulfides, and sulfite ...

A "green" highly selective oxidation of organic sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides was developed using hydrogen peroxide and glacial acetic acid under transition metal-free and mild conditions. The oxidation procedure is very simple and the products are easily isolated in excellent yields (90-99%).

Aqueous H2O2 is an ideal oxidant, when coupled with a tungstate complex and a quaternary ammonium hydrogensulfate as an acidic phase-transfer catalyst. It oxidizes alcohols, olefins, and sulfides under organic solvent- and halide-free conditions in an economically, technically, and environmentally satisfying manner.

Copper mine drainages are restricted environments that have been overlooked as sources of new biocatalysts for bioremediation and organic syntheses. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the enzymatic activities (esterase, epoxide hydrolase and monooxygenase) of 56 heterotrophic bacteria isolated from a neutral copper mine drainage (Sossego Mine, Canaã dos Carajás, Brazil). Hydrolase and mon...

The chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements remains the last great frontier of the periodic table. While many main group and transition metal elements have been known from antiquity, it was not until the late 20 th century that the lanthanides found ready industrial and commercial applications as phosphors, optical coatings, polishing agents, and catalytic applications. This dissertat...

Sulfur and iron concentrations in wood from three 17(th) century shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea, the Ghost wreck, the Crown and the Sword, were obtained by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning. In near anaerobic environments symbiotic microorganisms degrade waterlogged wood, reduce sulfate and promote accumulation of low-valent sulfur compounds, as previously found for the famous wrecks of the Vasa ...

Acoustic backscatter contrast in depositional sediments under salmon farm cages in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, was correlated with localized changes in (unknown) sediment geotechnical properties, as indicated by 4 independent measures of organic enrichment. Sediment total sulfides and redox potentials, enzyme hydrolyzable amino acids, sediment profile imaging and macrofaunal samples, taken at mid...

In addition to halide oxidation, the vanadium haloperoxidases are capable of oxidizing sulfides to sulfoxides. Four vanadium complexes with tripodal amine ligands, K[VO(O(2))(heida)] (1), VO(2)(bpg) (2), K[VO(2)(ada)] (3), and K(2)[VO(O(2))(nta)] (4), previously shown to perform bromide oxidation (Colpas, G.
