We reveal here the unique reactivity of α-(alkylideneamino)nitriles toward molecular oxygen. Thus, α-(alkylideneamino)nitriles can serve as the imide building block for the efficient synthesis of imides in the absence of transition metals under extremely mild conditions.

α-Amino nitriles are synthesized in a one-pot, three-component coupling of aldehydes (or ketones), aniline, and trimethylsilyl cyanide using a catalytic amount of choline chloride.2ZnCl2 as a bio Lewis acidic ionic liquid. Mild Lewis acidic characteristic of this ionic liquid allows efficient synthesis of α-amino nitriles from acid sensitive aldehydes.

An efficient palladium-catalyzed synthesis of 3-acylindoles using free (N-H) indoles and nitriles has been developed. The acylation reaction proceeded well under the Pd(OAc)(2)/2,2'-bipyridine system and with D-(+)-camphorsulfonic acid as the additive.
