Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health threat, resulting in an urgent unmet need for a rapid, non-sputum-based quantitative test to detect active Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infections in clinically diverse populations and quickly assess Mtb treatment responses for emerging drug-resistant strains. We have identified Mtb-specific peptide fragments and developed a method to rapidly quant...

Au and Ag hybrid hexagonal nanodisks were synthesized on ZnO nanorods' (0002) surface via a new two-step deposition-annealing method. The structural, compositional, as well as optical investigations were carried out systematically to find out the nanodisks' formation mechanism and optical enhancement effect. It was shown that the core-shell Au/Ag nanodisk can be formed under rapid annealing tem...

Very long range surface-enhanced Raman scattering is observed from a nickel nanowire that is separated by 120 nm from a pair of gold nanodisks. The excitation of the surface-plasmon resonance (SPR) from the gold nanodisk pair generates an enhanced electromagnetic field near the nickel segment (SEM, left), leading to Raman intensity greater than the nickel alone (right).

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering using gold nanoring substrates is studied. The measured enhancement factors of arrays of single nanorings and nanoring dimers are compared with that of an array of nanodisk dimers. The measured average enhancement factor for the single nanorings is 4.2 x 10(6). The experimental enhancement factors are compared with the electromagnetic enhancement factors predic...

A method for real-time evaluation of cell viability was developed by using oxygen as an endogenous indicator in scanning electrochemical microscopy to monitor the nanoscale height change of a single cell in a physiological environment with a novel Pt nanodisk electrode and a newly designed step-approaching strategy.

We report the synthesis of Ag nanodisk using polystyrene mesospheres as templates. TEM measurements show that the average disk thickness is 9.0 +/- 1.0 nm and the diameter is 36 +/- 8 nm. The particles exhibit an intense electronic spectrum that differs markedly from that for spheres (purple vs yellow solutions). We present electromagnetic theory calculations which exhibit a qualitative match w...
