Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV) is transmitted by aphids nonpersistently causing severe disease outbreaks in commercial lettuce crops. New strategies to control plant viruses have arisen based on molecular techniques, which analyze plantvirus-vector interactions. In this work, two PCR-based methods with a previous immunocapture phase, have been developed to detect LMV in single aphids. Detection rat...

ABSTRACT Thirteen aphid species were tested for their ability to transmit Pennsylvania isolates of Plum pox virus (PPV) collected in Columbia (PENN-3), Franklin (PENN-4), and York (PENN-7) Counties, PA. Four species, Aphis fabae, A. spiraecola, Brachycaudus persicae, and Myzus persicae, consistently transmitted PPV in preliminary transmission tests. Two species, Metopolophium dirhodum and Rhopa...

For a further examination and elaboration of our simple charge disproportionation model for Fe4+-oxides, 2~e" + Fe3+ + Fe5+, two series of solid solutions Cal-xSrxFe03 and Srl-xLaxFe03 with the perovskite structure have been studied. The Msssbauer spectrum of Sro.sLao.sFeO3 at 4 K clearly indicates the disproportionation. For both series of oxides, the disproportionation seems to set in at the ...

The genomic sequence of a new icosahedral DNA virus infecting Myzus persicae has been determined. Analysis of 5499 nt of the viral genome revealed five open reading frames (ORFs) evenly distributed in the 5' half of both DNA strands. Three ORFs (ORF1-3) share the same strand, while two other ORFs (ORF4 and ORF5) are detected in the complementary sequence. The overall genomic organization is sim...

Quinolactacide isolated from Penicillium citrinum F 1539 was synthesized and evaluated for its insecticidal activities. The key steps of the total synthesis were an acyl migration reaction of the enol ester intermediate and dehydrogenation of tetrahydroquinolactacide with manganese dioxide. The synthesized quinolactacide showed 100% and 42% mortality against the green peach aphid (Myzus persica...

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), is a major insect pest of many agronomic and horticultural crops and is distributed worldwide. Aphid management is often based on application of insecticides. However, the aphid is now resistant to many of these and much interest has recently developed in identification of novel alternative insecticides. Venom isolated from the red imported fire a...

Received: October 27, 2016 Revised: December 23, 2016 Accepted: January 04, 2017 Abstract: Aims: Lettuce and broccoli are high value vegetable crops in California. The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis on lettuce, and the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae on broccoli are important insect pests that are frequently managed with chemical...

By a screening program searching for new pesticides from fungal sources, an insecticidal compound was isolated from Penicillium citrinum F 1539. The compound, named quinolactacide, was novel and showed 88% mortality against green peach aphids (Myzus persicae) at 250 ppm. Its structure was determined by spectroscopic techniques.

Aphids are economically important pests that display exceptional variation in host range. The determinants of diverse aphid host ranges are not well understood, but it is likely that molecular interactions are involved. With significant progress being made towards understanding host responses upon aphid attack, the mechanisms underlying non-host resistance remain to be elucidated. Here, we inve...

Recombinant fusion proteins containing arthropod toxins have been developed as a new class of biopesticides. The recombinant fusion protein Hv1a/GNA, containing the spider venom toxin ω-ACTX-Hv1a linked to snowdrop lectin (GNA) was shown to reduce survival of the peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae when delivered in artificial diet, with survival <10% after 8 days exposure to fusion protein at 1 ...
