A filter system for removing electronegative impurities from liquid argon is described. The active components of the filter are adsorbing molecular sieve and activated-copper-coated alumina granules. The system is capable of purifying liquid argon to an oxygen-equivalent impurity concentration of better than 30 parts per trillion, corresponding to an electron drift lifetime of at least 10 ms. R...

The methylene group of various substituted 2- and 4-benzylpyridines, benzyldiazines and benzyl(iso)quinolines was successfully oxidized to the corresponding benzylic ketones using a copper or iron catalyst and molecular oxygen as the stoichiometric oxidant. Application of the protocol in API synthesis is exemplified by the alternative synthesis of a precursor to the antimalarial drug Mefloquine...

A Pall Maxi-Gaskleen purifier of the Pall AresKleen family of gas purification products was evaluated for its efficacy in reducing oxygen impurities in a silicon germanium (SiGe) deposition process for a strained silicon application at a major IDM in the US. Impact on process parameters such as hydrogen pre-bake temperature and interfacial/within-film oxygen concentration were studied as a func...

A small amount of coadsorbed impurity species could significantly alter the surface diffusion of CO on Ni~110!. Three impurity species, sulfur, oxygen, and potassium are studied here. The former two are known as ‘‘poisons’’ and the latter as a ‘‘promoter’’ for CO hydrogenation on Ni. All three are found to impede CO diffusion drastically. The apparent diffusion activation energy ED increases fr...

Iron released by steel corrosion was found to be a key impurity in reactions with dissolved oxygen in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic alloys. The iron-oxygen-magnetite equilibrium was characterized, allowing the quantification of phenomena that are important for long-term operation of lead-alloy based installations such as corrosion rate control and management of precipitates.

Fullerenes have been a main focus of scientific research since their discovery due to the interesting possible applications in various fields like organic photovoltaics (OPVs). In particular, the derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C60-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is currently one of the most popular choices due to its higher solubility in organic solvents compared to unsubstituted C60. One of the cent...

Organic molecular crystals represent an excellent platform for fundamental studies of optoelectronic properties of organic semiconductors. [ 1 ] Rubrene, in particular, has attracted signifi cant attention due to a very low density of charge traps, recordhigh charge carrier mobility, and a very large micrometer-scale exciton diffusion length. [ 2 , 3 ] In this study, using rubrene as a model co...

A magnetic impurity in a fermionic superfluid hosts bound quasiparticle states known as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states. We argue here that, if the impurity is mobile (i.e., has a finite mass), the impurity and its bound Yu-Shiba-Rusinov quasiparticle move together as a midgap molecule, which has an unusual "Mexican-hat" dispersion that is tunable via the fermion density. We map out the impurity disper...
