The goal of this study is to conduct a performance evaluation of the Virtual Microscope, a software system employing a client-server architecture to provide a realistic emulation of a high power light microscope. The system is required to provide interactive response times for the standard behavior of a physical microscope. These behaviors include continuously moving the stage and changing magn...

A combined Raman and atomic force microscope (AFM) microscope has been installed at beamline P01, PETRA III, DESY in Hamburg and is now available for all users of this beamline. With this unique setup 57 Fe nuclear resonance scattering and simultaneously performed Raman or Atomic Force Microscopy experiments are possible. Here we report on technical details of this new sample environment and on...

Over the past ten years the atomic force microscope has developed more and more into a spectroscopic tool rather than a simple microscope. Still, for most non-expert users corning from fields other than physics, such as biomedical scientists, dealing with the advanced spectroscopic AFM techniques beyond imaging is not so simple. This tutorial answers some how-to-do-it questions concerning the m...

G(u,u',u") = 0, (1) where u = u(x, x,..., x), and u', u" denote all the first and second partial derivatives of u. For simplicity we will assume here that both u and G are scalars and denote by ua, uab, the partial derivatives dau and respectively dahu; a,b =1,2, ..., n+1. Let u (x) be a given solution of (1). Our equation is said to be elliptic or hyperbolic at u°(x) according to whether the (...

We consider the problem of designing optimal linear codes (in terms of having the largest minimum distance) subject to a support constraint on the generator matrix. We show that the largest minimum distance can be achieved by a subcode of a Reed-Solomon code of small field size. As a by-product of this result, we settle the GM-MDS conjecture of Dau et. al. in the affirmative.

PURPOSE A web-based application was developed to remotely view slide specimens and control all functions of a research-level light microscopy workstation, called AccessScope. Students and scientists with upper limb mobility and visual impairments are often unable to use a light microscope by themselves and must depend on others in its operation. METHOD Users with upper limb mobility impairmen...

In this research various objective quality measures are evaluated in order to predict the intelligibility for a wide range of non-linearly processed speech signals and speech degraded by additive noise. The obtained results are compared with the prediction results of a more advanced perceptual-based model proposed by Dau et al. and an objective intelligibility measure, namely the coherence spee...

The annotation of genomes from NGS platforms needs to be automated and fully integrated. However, maintaining consistency and accuracy in genome annotation is a challenging problem because millions of protein database entries are not assigned reliable functions. This shortcoming limits the knowledge that can be extracted from genomes and metabolic models. Launched in 2005, the MicroScope platfo...

We present a simple method using an axicon and spatial light modulator to create multiple parallel Bessel beams and precisely control their individual positions in three dimensions. This technique is tested as an alternative to classical holographic beam shaping commonly used now in optical tweezers. Various applications of precise control of multiple Bessel beams are demonstrated within a sing...
