The MG1 population of mucins was isolated from human whole salivas by gel chromatography followed by isopycnic density gradient centrifugation. The reduced and alkylated MG1 mucins, separated by anion exchange chromatography, were of similar size (radius of gyration 55-64 nm) and molecular weight (2.5-2.9 x 10(6) Da). Two differently-charged populations of MG1 subunits were observed which showe...

Superconducting transition temperatures (Tc’s) of MgB2, Mg1−xCaxB2, Mg1−xNaxB2, and Mg1−xAlxB2 are studied within the McMillan approximation using electronic and structural information obtained from density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. The density of states and Tc of MgB2 are both shown to be extremely sensitive to volume; in fact the density of states around...

Many species of bacteria secrete natural products that inhibit the growth or development of competing species. In turn, competitors may develop or acquire resistance to antagonistic molecules. Few studies have investigated the interplay of these countervailing forces in direct competition between two species. We have used an imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) approach to track metabolites exchange...

Locally repairable codes are desirable for distributed storage systems to improve the repair efficiency. In this paper, we first build a bridge between locally repairable code and packing. As an application of this bridge, some optimal locally repairable codes can be obtained by packings, which gives optimal locally repairable codes with flexible parameters. Index Terms Distributed storage, loc...

existence of capacity drop phenomenon, as the difference between pre-queue and queue discharge flow rates, has been one of the controversial concepts of traffic engineering. several researches have focused on capacity drop existence and also its estimation issues. this paper aims to estimate capacity drop based not only on a comparison between breakdown and queue discharge flow rates, but also ...

Locally repairable codes, or locally recoverable codes (LRC for short) are designed for application in distributed and cloud storage systems. Similar to classical block codes, there is an important bound called the Singleton-type bound for locally repairable codes. In this paper, an optimal locally repairable code refers to a block code achieving this Singleton-type bound. Like classical MDS co...

We show that the well-known Kohn anomaly predicts Tc for ordered AlB2-type structures. We use ab initio density functional theory to calculate phonon dispersions for Mg1-xAlxB2 compositions and identify a phonon anomaly with magnitude that predicts experimental values of Tc for all x. Key features of these anomalies correlate with the electronic structure of Mg1-xAlxB2. This approach predicts T...
