ISO/IEC has issued several International Standards concerning the concept of traceability in laboratory medicine. prEN ISO 17511 Metrological traceability of values assigned to calibrators and control materials, prEN ISO 18153 Metrological traceability of values for catalytic concentrations of enzymes assigned to calibrators and control materials, prEN ISO 15193 Presentation of reference measur...
At the start of the 21st century, a dramatic change occurred in the clinical laboratory community. Concepts from Metrology, the science of measurement, began to be more carefully applied to the in vitro diagnostic (IVD) community, that is, manufacturers. A new appreciation of calibrator traceability evolved. Although metrological traceability always existed, it was less detailed and formal. The...
The paper describes the metrological hierarchy established for the dissemination of angle measurements from the “Dimensional Metrology Laboratory” (LAMIN) of the “National Institute of Metrology, Standardisation and Industrial Quality” (INMETRO). It shows the traceability chain from the national standard of length to the reference system, a small angle generator, and then to angle standards and...

The fluorine content of polymer particles labelled with 2,2,2-trifluoroethylamine was reliably quantified with overlapping sensitivity ranges by XPS and solid-state NMR. This provides a first step towards reference materials for the metrological traceability of surface group quantifications. The extension of this concept to fluorescence spectroscopy is illustrated.
