Two aerobic, pink-pigmented, facultatively methylotrophic bacteria, strains F20T and RXM(T), are described taxonomically. On the basis of their phenotypic and genotypic properties, the isolates are proposed as novel species of the genus Methylobacterium, Methylobacterium suomiense sp. nov. (type strain F20T = VKM B-2238T = NCIMB 13778T) and Methylobacterium lusitanum sp. nov. (type strain RXMT ...

The structure of biofilms in drinking water systems is influenced by the interplay between biological and physical processes. Bacterial aggregates in bulk fluid are important in seeding biofilm formation on surfaces. In simple pure and co-cultures, certain bacteria, including Methylobacterium, are implicated in the formation of aggregates. However, it is unclear whether they help to form aggreg...

The objective of this work was to study the production of siderophores by endophytic bacteria Methylobacterium spp., which occupy the same ecological niche as Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp) in citrus plants. The siderophore production of Methylobacterium strains was tested according to chromeazurol agar assay test (CAS), Csáky test (hydroxamate-type) and Arnow test (catechol-type). In ad...

Rhizobia described so far belong to three distinct phylogenetic branches within the alpha-2 subclass of Proteobacteria. Here we report the discovery of a fourth rhizobial branch involving bacteria of the Methylobacterium genus. Rhizobia isolated from Crotalaria legumes were assigned to a new species, "Methylobacterium nodulans," within the Methylobacterium genus on the basis of 16S ribosomal DN...

Methylobacterium species are a cause of health care-associated infection, including infections in immunocompromised hosts. The ability of Methylobacterium species to form biofilms and to develop resistance to high temperatures, drying, and disinfecting agents may explain the colonization of Methylobacterium in the hospital environment in, e.g., endoscopes. Due to its slow growth, it can be easi...

Bacteria of the genus Methylobacterium are widespread in the environment, but their ecological role in ecosystems, such as the plant phyllosphere, is not very well understood. To gain better insight into the distribution of different Methylobacterium species in diverse ecosystems, a rapid and specific cultivation-independent method for detection of these organisms and analysis of their communit...

Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 was used to explore the genetics of dephosphotetrahydromethanopterin (dH(4)MPT) biosynthesis. Strains with mutations in eight "archaeal-type" genes linked on the chromosome of M. extorquens AM1 were analyzed for the ability to synthesize dH(4)MPT, and six were found to be dH(4)MPT negative. Putative functions of these genes in dH(4)MPT biosynthesis are discussed.

A number of recent experiments at the single-cell level have shown that genetically identical bacteria that live in homogeneous environments often show a substantial degree of phenotypic variation between cells. Often, this variation is attributed to stochastic aspects of biology-the fact that many biological processes involve small numbers of molecules and are thus inherently variable. However...

Three pink-pigmented, facultatively methylotrophic strains, designated MP1, MP2 and MR(T), were isolated from seawater from southern China and characterized. Analysis of their complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that they constituted three separate phylogenetic groups, showing the highest levels of similarity with respect to some members of the genus Methylobacterium. PCR amplification al...

Both Mycobacterium spp. and Methylobacterium spp. are opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens that are found on pipe surfaces in households. However, examination of data published in prior microbiological surveys indicates that Methylobacterium spp. and Mycobacterium spp. tend not to coexist in the same household plumbing biofilms. That evidence led us to test the hypothesis that Methylobacter...
