In recent years there has been an increased interest in metal foams in the eld of material science. The stress absorbing potential is one of the most interesting properties for the application of aluminium foam (e.g. car manufacturing). Material scientists need to investigate the structure of metal foams in order to optimize their deformation behavior. An interactive tool for the investigation ...

A new type of composite structure with a metal foam is reinforced by the metal corrugated core, called metal-foam-filled sandwich panel with a corrugated or V-frame core, is modelled, simulated, and studied in this article. All types of samples with different relative densities of the foam are tested and analyzed under the drop hammer load. The sandwich panel included two aluminium face-sheet, ...

-Methods for producing metal foams are many, but obtaining repeatability in the properties is very difficult. The main challenge posed by the metal foam is that obtaining homogeneous porosity. Although lot of problems involved in the development of metal foams, research people are attracted to the metal foams because of its attractive properties like acoustic damping, bomb mitigation, light wei...

The effects of gating system and pattern geometry on the metal flow in the lost foam casting (LFC) process have been investigated using glass covered mold and video recording system. Unlike convectional casting process, the type of the gating system showed little effect on fillability in lost foam, but pattern thickness had large effect on mold filling. The mold filling behavior seems to be con...

Thin metal films coated on soft elastomeric foam substrates exhibit enhanced electromechanical performance. The open-cell foam structure conveys highly anisotropic mechanical properties within the top, thin capping elastomer at the surface of the foam. Upon stretching, large strain fields inducing cracks and folds localize above the foam cells, while the surrounding cell ligaments remain almost...

abstractin this paper, we investigate effect of fe–intermetallic compounds on plastic deformation of closed-cell composite aluminum foam as filler of thin-walled tubes. however, deformation of the aluminum foam-filled thin-walled tubes as crushed-box will be presented in part (ii). composite foams of alsi7sic3 and alsi7sic3-(fe) as closed cell were synthesized by powder metallurgy foaming metho...

Due to their large surface-area-to-volume ratio and tortuous structure, metal foams hold promise for heat transfer applications. Both of these factors increase the heat transfer by enhancing the mixing and surface area. The main disadvantage associated with their thermal-hydraulic performance is relatively higher pressure drop, resulting in larger pumping power requirements if they are used in ...

A novel three-dimensional (3D) metal/metal oxide core/branch array electrode has been fabricated as a supercapacitor electrode. Hollow Ni nanocorn arrays are constructed on Ni foams and act as a highly conductive and stable support to Co3O4 nanoflakes. Enhanced pseudocapacitive performance compared to bare Co3O4 nanosheets is demonstrated with high rate capability and excellent cycling stability.

Low density metallic foams of consistent controlled morphology offer improved unique material and mechanical properties, yet they have eluded traditional metallurgical engineering methods. A new method to produce metallic foam through a thermo-plastic expansion process has been discovered and characterized with microtomography. The new foaming process enables porosities unachievable through tra...

abstract porous materials are commonly found in nature and as industrial materials such as wood, carbon, foams, ceramics and bricks. in order to use them effectively, their mechanical properties must be understood in relation to their micro-structures. foam made from non-flammable metal will remain non-flammable and the foam is generally recyclable back to its base material. this research work ...
