Zeolite-geopolymer hybrid materials have been formed when kaolin was used as a starting material. Their characteristics are of interest because they can have a wide pore size distribution with micro- and meso-pores due to the zeolite and geopolymer, respectively. In this study, Zeolite-geopolymer hybrid bulk materials were fabricated using four kinds of kaolinitic clays (a halloysite and three ...
Geopolymer paste is an innovative construction material which shall be produced by chemical action of inorganic molecules. It is a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional Portland cement which is abundantly available worldwide. In this study, the influence of different alkaline activators (Na and K) on the mechanical and thermal behaviors of metakaolin-based geopolymer was inv...
This study reports on the microstructure, compressive strength, and drying shrinkage of metakaolin (MK) based geopolymers produced by partially replacing MK by oil palm ash (OPA). The OPA was used as raw material producing different molar ratios of SiO₂/Al₂O₃ and CaO/SiO₂. The geopolymer samples were cured at 80°C for 1, 2, or 4 hours and kept at ambient temperature until testing. The compressi...
In this study the development of a metakaolin based geopolymeric mortar to be used as bonding matrix for external strengthening of reinforced concrete beams is reported. Four geopolymer formulations have been obtained by varying the composition of the activating solution in terms of SiO₂/Na₂O ratio. The obtained samples have been characterized from a structural, microstructural and mechanical p...
The effect of the curing in a carbonated ambient of the solids obtained after the stabilization/solidification (S/S) of metallurgical waste using geopolymerization technology is described in this paper. The electric arc furnace (EAF) dust used to stabilize contains hazardous metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr or Zn. Different geopolymeric agents as potassium hydroxide, potassium silicate, metakaolin and...
Geopolymers are a class of X-ray amorphous alkali aluminosilicate gel binder materials with potential applications in a wide range of areas. In particular, geopolymers can provide significant improvements over traditional Portland cement technology in applications requiring resistance to acid or salt attack, or thermal stability at temperatures up to 1000°C. The quasi-zeolitic nature of some of...
The effect of organic phenol on the compressive and flexural strength of a metakaolin based geopolymer is studied. It was found that 12 wt% phenol resins can increase the compressive and flexural strength by 30% and 65% respectively. In addition, the reinforcing effect of phenol resin is higher in Na-PS and Na-PSS type geopolymers rather than Na-PSDS. Two distinct endothermic peaks were detecte...
