BACKGROUND Hypoglossal-facial anastomosis is the gold standard treatment for facial reanimation in those cases where the facial nerve has been damaged near the brainstem. The technique that requires temporal bone drilling and partial section of the hypoglossal nerve is usually preferred. This technique diminishes tongue morbidity while preserves good facial reanimation. The goal of the present ...

INTRODUCTION The exact etiology of Bell's palsy still remains obscure. The only authenticated finding is inflammation and edema of the facial nerve leading to entrapment inside the facial canal. OBJECTIVE To identify if there is any relationship between the grade of Bell's palsy and diameter of the facial canal, and also to study any possible anatomic predisposition of facial canal for Bell's...

OBJECTIVE Our study emphasizes the relationship between the temporal bone structures and the mastoid portion of the facial nerve. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-two temporal bones taken from adult cadavers of both sexes subjected to tympanoplastic procedure were used to make reference measures of the mastoid portion of the facial nerve. Appropriate instruments were used for measurement and stati...

Chorda tymapni, branch of facial nerve arising from its vertical segment is at risk throughout its course during middle ear and mastoid surgeries. We observed an unusual course of the nerve during tympanoplasty. Course of nerve was carefully observed and compared with previous studies. ear cholesteatoma were determined. Various clinical factors predictive of FND preoperatively were also researched. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of 112 patients (115 ears) undergoing mastoidectomy by canal wall-up or canal wall-down methods during a five-year period was conducted, recording occurrence rates and sites of FND at the time of surgery. Correlations between FND and cl...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The imaging appearance of facial nerve schwannomas (FNSs) has been described as an enhancing tubular mass (using T1-enhanced MR) within an enlarged facial nerve canal (using CT). The purpose of this study is to identify how often the FNS imaging findings conform to this description and determine whether there are underlying anatomic explanations for the discrepant imaging...
