We investigated the role of Escherichia coli expressing mannose-resistant hemagglutination and adhesins with regard to the induction of leukotrienes from a suspension of human lymphocytes, monocytes, and basophils (LMBs) compared with human polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMNs). Genetically cloned E. coli strains expressing various types of mannose-resistant hemagglutination (MRH+) were phagocy...

Subclass IIa bacteriocins have strong antilisterial activity and can control the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in food. However, L. monocytogenes may develop resistance towards such bacteriocins. In this follow-up study, the transcriptomes of a high level (L502-1) and a low level (L502-6) spontaneous sakacin P-resistant mutant strain of L. monocytogenes were compared to the wild-type (L502)....

A culture of Escherichia coli possessing colonization factor antigen I was subjected to isopycnic separation on Percoll gradients. The results demonstrated successful division of the culture into two populations: (i) bacteria which cause mannose-resistant hemagglutination and (ii) bacteria which lack the ability to hemagglutinate in the presence of mannose.

background: to determine the morphological specifications of the bird schistosomes cercaria from lymnaea gedrosiana and to detect the surface carbohydrates as receptors for host lectins in the host-parasite relationship systems such as avian schistosomiasis and human cercarial dermatitis. methods: one hundred ninety two snails collected from dezful areas in khuzestan province, in the south west...

Proteus mirabilis, a cause of serious urinary tract infection and acute pyelonephritis, produces several putative virulence determinants, among them, fimbriae. Principally, two fimbrial types are produced by this species: mannose-resistant/Proteus-like (MR/P) fimbriae and mannose-resistant/Klebsiella-like (MR/K) fimbriae. To isolate MR/P fimbrial gene sequences, a P. mirabilis cosmid library wa...

A quantitative assessment of the mannose resistant, adhesive property of Escherichia coli from patients with ulcerative colitis and from controls was made using a buccal epithelial cell adhesion assay, which also permitted assessment of adhesion to cells from other host sources. E coli from patients with ulcerative colitis adhered to buccal epithelial cells to a greater extent than those obtain...

Type 1 fimbriae from Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and mannose-resistant fimbriae from Erwinia rhapontici were purified and characterized. The type 1 fimbrillin had an apparent molecular weight of 16,500; that of the mannose-resistant fimbrillin was 18,000. The amino-terminal amino acid sequences of the two fimbrillins were related, but tryptic peptide maps showed significant differences...

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common public health problem, mainly caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Patients with chronic UTIs usually treated long-acting prophylactic antibiotics, which promotes the development of antibiotic-resistant UPEC strains and may complicate their long-term management. D-mannose extracts rich in such as mannan oligosaccharides (MOS; oligomers) p...

Glycopeptides from the microplasmodia of Physarum polycephalum grown in the presence of [3H]mannose or [3H]glucosamine were characterized by gel-filtration, anion-exchange and lectin-affinity chromatography before and after enzymatic or chemical treatment. Various types of glycopeptide were found in the growing plasmodia as shown by Con A affinity column chromatography, while pulse-labeled prec...
