Development of lanthanide detoxification agents and protocols is of great importance in management of overdoses. Due to safety of maltol as a detoxifying agent in metal overloads, it can be used as a lanthanide detoxifying agent. In order to demonstrate the biodistribution of final complex, [(153)Sm]-samarium maltolate was prepared using Sm-153 chloride (radiochemical purity >99.9%; ITLC and sp...

Exposure to high levels of aluminium (Al) leads to neurofibrillary degeneration and that Al concentration is increased in degenerating neurons in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Nevertheless, the role of Al in AD remains controversial and there is little proof directly interlinking Al to AD. The major problem in understanding Al toxicity is the complex Al speciation chemistry in biological systems. A...

Gallium is antiproliferative to many types of cancer, due primarily to its ability to act as a non-functional mimic of ferric iron (Fe(3+)). Because Fe(3+) is needed for ribonucleotide reductase activity--and thus DNA synthesis--gallium can inhibit DNA production and cell division. Diagnostic gallium scans have shown that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is commonly avid for gallium. Furthermore,...

This study's objective was to determine the in vitro antimicrobial activities of gallium maltolate (GaM) and 20 other antimicrobial agents against clinical equine isolates of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. The growth of cultured isolates was not inhibited by any concentration of GaM. MIC data revealed susceptibility to commonly used antimicrobials.

Introduction: Due to the cell labeling potentials of various metal-maltol complexes, the idea of developing a possible cell labeling imaging agent using single photon emission computed chromatography (SPECT) with[111In]-maltolate complex has been investigated. Methods: [111In] labeled 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-onate ([111In]-maltolate) was prepared using f...

Aluminum (Al) can cause neurotoxicity, a low-turnover osteomalacia, and microcytic anemia. To test the null hypothesis that the chemical form (species) of Al does not influence its mechanism or rate of absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, Al flux across and uptake into Caco-2 cells was investigated. Caco-2 cells were grown on porous membranes mounted in vertical diffusion chambers or in ...

The objective of this study was to determine the in vitro antimicrobial activity of gallium maltolate (GaM) against Rhodococcus equi. A total of 98 virulent bacterial isolates from equine clinical cases were examined, of which 19 isolates were known to be resistant to macrolides and rifampin. Isolates were cultured with various concentrations of GaM and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) va...

BACKGROUND Alzheimers disease (AD) is a devastative neurodegenerative disorder. Lack of substantial animal model that can unravel molecular underpinnings has been a major lacuna which limited the understanding of the etiology of the disease in turn limiting the employment of potential therapeutic strategies to combat the disease for a few decades. Our studies for the first time provided substan...

1. Until recently studies of intestinal aluminium absorption used pharmacological amounts of stable 27Al. 2. To examine the intestinal absorption of trace amounts of different chemical compounds of aluminium, in the present study we have employed the long half-life isotope of aluminium, 26Al, and accelerator mass spectrometry. Trace amounts of 26Al (2.7-12.1 ng) as the hydroxide, citrate, citra...
