The effect of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of six novel fenpropimorph derivatives on lipid and sterol composition of Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Malassezia pachydermatis and Malassezia furfur was investigated. The MICs for the most effective derivatives were found in the range from 3.7 to 56.7 microM and were 2-3 times lower compared to the commercial fungicide bifona...

A urea broth microdilution method to assay the susceptibilities of seven Malassezia species was developed. This method indicated the same sensitivities as the agar plate dilution method for isolates of Malassezia furfur, M. pachydermatis, M. slooffiae, and M. sympodialis.

Despite being considered an emerging yeast related to immunocompromised individuals, severe infections by Malassezia furfur have not been evaluated. During a one-year survey on yeasts fungemia, 290 neonatal and 17 pediatric patients with intravascular catheters, lipid parenteral nutrition, prolonged ward stay, and surgery were enrolled. In addition, the origin of the infection was investigated ...

The MICs of ketoconazole and itraconazole against Pityrosporum orbiculare were 0.02 to 0.05 and 0.1 to 0.2 micrograms ml-1, respectively. In a rabbit model, orally administered ketoconazole (1 mg kg-1) afforded protection against experimental pityriasis (tinea) versicolor in all animals. Itraconazole (5 mg kg-1) was effective in four of five rabbits.

Malassezia fungi have been the suspected cause of dandruff for more than a century. Previously referred to as Pityrosporum ovale, Pityrosporum orbiculare, or Malassezia, these fungi are now known to consist of at least seven Malassezia species. Each species has a specific ecological niche, as well as specific biochemical and genetic characteristics. Malassezia yeasts have fastidious culture con...

Melanins are synthesized by organisms of all biological kingdoms and comprise a heterogeneous class of natural pigments. Certain of these polymers have been implicated in the pathogenesis of several important human fungal pathogens. This study investigated whether the fungal skin pathogen Malassezia furfur produces melanin or melanin-like compounds. A melanin-binding monoclonal antibody (MAb) l...

An evaluation was made of the phospholipase activities of Malassezia pachydermatis strains isolated from healthy dogs versus those from dogs with dermatitis and otitis. A high percentage of strains of M. pachydermatis obtained from lesion sites (93.9%) produced phospholipase, compared to the strains obtained from healthy skin of the same dog with localized lesions (41.4%) and healthy dogs (10.6%).

The present study is designed to evaluate the application of a simple method for rapid identification of Malassezia furfur among other Malassezia spp. based on production of a brownish-red pigment and its diffusion into the medium containing L-tryptophan as a sigle source of nitrogen.  91 strains of Malassezia (20% M. furfur, 2% M. sympodialis, 5% M. obtosa and 73% M. globosa) isolated from ski...

Malassezia yeasts are associated with several dermatological disorders. The conventional identification of Malassezia species by phenotypic methods is complicated and time-consuming, and the results based on culture methods are difficult to interpret. A comparative molecular approach based on the use of three molecular techniques, namely, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis, ...

We present a case of Malassezia furfur meningitis arising in a very low birth weight infant with chronic lung disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, and intraventricular hemorrhage. M. furfur meningitis was probably acquired late following successful treatment for earlier systemic central line-associated M. furfur infection. M. furfur meningitis has only once been previously reported. Unlike the p...
