The macaque lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) exhibits an intricate lamination pattern, which changes midway through the nucleus at a point coincident with small gaps due to the blind spot in the retina. We present a three-dimensional model of morphogenesis in which local cell interactions cause a wave of development of neuronal receptive fields to propagate through the nucleus and establish two...
This paper attempts to determine the mechanisms governing the grain growth process that occurs during lamination annealing of a cold-rolled, motor-lamination steel. A new simulation approach linking a Monte Carlo model, with EBSD scans used as input, has been employed to incorporate the effects of crystallographic texture on the simulated grain growth process. The results from the texture analy...
automobile light weight structural composites are subjected to the various loadings in their service lives. honeycombs are increasingly used as core structures in automobile light weight structures as energy absorbers. in this paper the energy absorption of honeycomb panels under impact of cylindrical projectile is numerically and experimentally studied. the effect of the core materials and cro...
Suppose L is a lamination of a Riemannian manifold by hypersurfaces with the same constant mean curvature. We prove that every limit leaf of L is stable for the Jacobi operator. A simple but important consequence of this result is that the set of stable leaves of L has the structure of a lamination. Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary 53A10, Secondary 49Q05, 53C42
Surface laminations are classic closed sets of disjoint curves in surfaces. We give here a full description of how to obtain codings of such laminations when they are non-orientable by using lamination languages, i.e. specific linear complexity languages of two-way infinite words. We also compare lamination languages with symbolic laminations, i.e. the coding counterparts of algebraic laminations.
Laminations are classic sets of disjoint and non-self-crossing curves on surfaces. Lamination languages are languages of two-way infinite words which code laminations by using associated labeled embedded graphs, and which are subshifts. Here, we characterize the possible exact affine factor complexities of these languages through bouquets of circles, i.e. graphs made of one vertex, as represent...
We show how to build tangles T in a 3-ball with the property that any knot obtained by tangle sum with T has a persistent lamination in its exterior, and therefore has property P. The construction is based on an example of a persistent lamination in the exterior of the twist knot 61, due to Ulrich Oertel. We also show how the construction can be generalized to n-string tangles.
We show that an outer automorphism acts loxodromically on the cyclic splitting complex if and only if it has a filling lamination and no generic leaf of the lamination is carried by a vertex group of a cyclic splitting. This is the analog for the cyclic splitting complex of HandelMosher’s theorem on loxodromics for the free splitting complex. We also show that such outer automorphisms have virt...
We investigate the formation of microscopic patterns in a copper single crystal deformed in a shear experiment. Using high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) imaging, we find a band-like microstructure consisting of confined areas in the sample with rotated lattice. Digital image correlation (DIC) allows us to exactly determine the macroscopic state of deformation of the sample....
