background: modern knee designs have popularized its use in younger patients due to its better performance. there remains uncertainty whether higher demands of these patients can affect implant survivorship. purpose: to assess whether modern knee designs have provided similar results in patients younger than 70 years versus older patients. methods: we included 203 consecutive patients (236 k...
The viability of unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA) as a stand-alone or temporising option for the management of gonarthrosis is a topic of considerable contention. Despite recent advances in prosthesis design and surgical technique, as well as mounting evidence of long-term survivorship, UKA remains infrequently used, accounting for just 8-15% of all knee arthroplasties. Instead this group is...
OBJECTIVE To determine whether cartilage volume loss is an independent predictor of knee replacement. DESIGN Prospective community based, four year prospective cohort study. METHODS 123 subjects with mild to moderate symptomatic radiographic knee osteoarthritis were recruited by either advertising, the Victorian branch of the Arthritis Foundation of Australia, treating general practitioners...
In this report we describe a 78-year-old man whose total knee arthroplasty showed the symptoms of infection with brucella with radiographic signs of loosening 5 years after the index surgery. The patient was treated successfully after a 2-stage revision arthroplasty surgery along with using rifampicin and doxycycline for 8 weeks.
To the Editor: I read with interest the article by Memtsoudis et al. in the recent issue of ANESTHESIOLOGY on perioperative outcomes after unilateral and bilateral total knee arthroplasty. When the authors discuss about the issue of benefits and risks of simultaneous versus staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty, they have quoted an article by Sliva et al. In the original article by Sliva et ...
BACKGROUND Knee pain is nearly twice as prevalent as hip pain in elderly people, yet knee replacement is far less common than hip replacement. AIM To investigate whether systematic differences in the primary care management of hip versus knee problems might explain the disparate rates of joint replacement. DESIGN OF STUDY Cross-sectional, population-based postal survey. SETTING Random sam...
BACKGROUND It is reported that a majority of the patients with knee osteoarthritis have cartilage degeneration in medial and patellofemoral compartments. A bi-compartmental knee replacement system was designed to treat osteoarthritis at medial and patellofemoral compartments. To date, there is very little information regarding the knee mechanics during gait after bi-compartmental knee replaceme...
Total Knee replacement is a procedure commonly performed for degenerative joint disorder, e.g. osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is considered to be the most common and successful joint replacement [1]. It is expected that there will be an increase demand for a bilateral total knee replacement in the future due to increase of aging population and the indication to the surgery1. Genera...
Introduction: Pain is one of the most common problems in patients undergoing joint replacement. Except for medicinal treatments for pain relief, non-pharmacological methods of pain control, such as Benson's relaxation, cause more compromise with pain and reduce pain, fear and anxiety, and can tolerate it for the patient. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Benson relaxation met...
