A brief review is presented of the theory of flexural edge waves, first predicted in 1960 by Yu K. Konenkov using Kirchhoff plate theory. It is demonstrated that the flexural edge wave is also predicted by Mindlin’s plate theory, and that the prediction agrees with measured data. It is noted that the edge wave was erroneously presented as a new type of bending wave solution in a recently publis...

Semi-analytical solutions for vibration analysis of nonlocal piezoelectric Kirchhoff plates resting on viscoelastic foundation with arbitrary boundary conditions are derived by developing Galerkin strip distributed transfer function method. Based on the nonlocal elasticity theory for piezoelectric materials and Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of motion and boundary conditions are ...

For a plate subject to stress boundary condition, the deformation determined by the Reissner–Mindlin plate bending model could be bending dominated, transverse shear dominated, or neither (intermediate), depending on the load. We show that the Reissner–Mindlin model has a wider range of applicability than the Kirchhoff–Love model, but it does not always converge to the elasticity theory. In the...

This paper presents the bending analysis of annular plates by the indirect Trefftz boundary approach. The formulation for thin and thick plates is based on the Kirchhoff plate theory and the Reissner plate theory. The governing equations are therefore a fourth-order boundary value problem and a sixth-order boundary value problem, respectively. The Trefftz method employs the complete set of solu...

The transient response of a flat circular plate to a sudden impact has been studied experimentally and theoretically. High-speed electronic speckle pattern interferometry reveals the presence of pulses that travel around the edge of the plate ahead of the bending motion initiated by the strike. It is found that the transient motion of the plate is well described by Kirchhoff thin-plate theory o...

It is shown that in the Love-Kirchhoff plate theory, an edge wave can travel in a circular thin disk made of an isotropic elastic material. This disk edge wave turns out to be faster than the classic flexural acoustic wave in a straight-edged, semi-infinite, thin plate, a wave which it mimics when the curvature radius becomes very large compared to the wavelength.

A new two-eigenfunctions theory, using the amplitude deflection and the generalized curvature as two fundamental eigenfunctions, is proposed for the free vibration solutions of a rectangular Mindlin plate. The three classical eigenvalue differential equations of a Mindlin plate are reformulated to arrive at two new eigenvalue differential equations for the proposed theory. The closed form eigen...

A layer-wise third order shear and normal deformable plate/shell theory (TSNDT) incorporating all geometric nonlinearities is used to study finite transient deformations of a curved laminated beam composed of a St. Venant–Kirchhoff material. In the TSNDT all displacement components of a point are expressed as 3rd order polynomials in the thickness coordinate in each layer while maintaining the ...

A meshfree computational method is proposed in this paper to solve Kirchhoff plate problems of various geometries. The deflection of the thin plate is approximated by using a Hermite-type radial basis function approximation technique. The standard Galerkin method is adopted to discretize the governing partial differential equations which were derived from using the Kirchhoff’s plate theory. The...
