The surface gravity of any Killing horizon, in any spacetime dimension, can be interpreted as a local, two-dimensional expansion rate seen by freely falling observers when they cross the horizon. Any twodimensional congruence of geodesics invariant under the Killing flow can be used to define this expansion, provided that the observers have unit Killing energy.

The quinolones differ in their mechanisms of bacterial killing. The rate of bacterial killing by quinolones can be influenced by the addition of bacterial protein or RNA synthesis inhibitors, and the growth phase of the bacterium. In this study, we compared the killing activities of gatifloxacin, trovafloxacin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin against staphylococci, pneumococci and Escherichia col...

To optimize plasmid containment, we have systematically investigated the factors that limit the killing efficiency of a suicide system based on the relF gene from Escherichia coli controlled by inducible lac promoters and placed on plasmids. In induction experiments with this suicide system, killing efficiency was unaffected by temperature and growth medium; there was no requirement for great p...

In spite of obvious possible sources of disturbance, the "velocity of killing" of organisms at supranormal temperatures, properly determined, tends to adhere to the Arrhenius equation for relation to temperature. Over certain ranges of temperature the relationship between log velocity of killing and 1/T degrees abs. is linear. Interpreted as due to the thermal denaturing of protein, it is possi...

The killing rate induced by ampicillin was determined in 20 strains of Escherichia coli. The apparent generation rate constant for each E. coli showed a characteristic concentration-dependent course. This course can be mathematically described and is determined by four parameters. Three of these parameters determine the speed of the process, and the fourth parameter determines a minimal concent...

We developed and applied pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) models to characterize in vitro bacterial rate of killing as a function of ceftazidime concentrations over time. For PK-PD modeling, data obtained during continuous and intermittent infusion of ceftazidime in Pseudomonas aeruginosa killing experiments with an in vitro pharmacokinetic model were used. The basic PK-PD model was a ma...
