A retrospective analysis of 71 nongonococcal joint infections in 63 patients is reported. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 59% of the patients. Five patients died as a result of infections. The outcome in Gram-negative joint infections was similar to the overall outcome in the entire series of patients. All 11 joints with infected prostheses ultimately required removal of the prostheses....

BACKGROUND Culturing of samples of periprosthetic tissue is the standard method used for the microbiologic diagnosis of prosthetic-joint infection, but this method is neither sensitive nor specific. In prosthetic-joint infection, microorganisms are typically present in a biofilm on the surface of the prosthesis. We hypothesized that culturing of samples obtained from the prosthesis would improv...

The hip joint is a strongly loaded joint and highly vulnerable to any diseases and pathological changes related to loading conditions (Wall, 2002). Improper load distribution in the hip joint leads to its pathological changes that consist in anomalous growth of the acetabulum and femur. In the most drastic clinical cases the only way of treatment is to replace the natural degenerated joint with...

Introduction: The demand for joint replacements in young patients is increasing, and therefore there is a need to increase the lifetime of the prostheses. To fulfil this requirement, new replacements’ designs and materials are being introduced. One of the design parameters that may affect wear of total knee replacements, and hence the predicted lifetime of such prostheses, is the insert conform...

Inflammatory or degenerative processes in glenohumeral joint lead to pain and restriction of movements of the shoulder. Prosthetic replacement of the glenohumeral joint has gained in popularity because of its efficacy in relieving pain. The pioneering successful prostheses for total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) have been based on an unconstrained de‐ sign, i.e. a metal spherical head component f...

In surgical knee replacement, the damaged knee joint is replaced with artificial prostheses. An accurate clinical evaluation must be carried out before applying knee prostheses to ensure optimal outcome from surgical operations and to reduce the probability of having long-term problems. Useful information can be inferred from estimates of the stress acting onto the bone-prosthesis system of the...
