Recent confirmation of intrinsic bacterial contamination of 10% povidone-iodine solution has raised questions regarding the bactericidal mechanism of iodophors and the possibility for survival of vegetative bacterial cells in iodophor solutions. In this laboratory investigation, five different species were exposed to various dilutions of three commercial preparations of 10% povidone-iodine solu...

Skin antisepsis prior to the induction of spinal anesthesia is essential because of the potential for infectious complications. Povidone-iodine is a widely used antiseptic solution for skin preparation before spinal anesthesia, and chlorhexidine alcohol solution is a commonly used alternative to povidone-iodine. Previous studies have shown that chlorhexidine is more effective than povidone-iodi...

We studied the kinetics of iodine in various forms, in order to establish appropriate guidelines of iodine prophylaxis for thyroid blockade at nuclear emergency in "iodine rich areas", such as Japan. First, the effect of equivalent dose of potassium iodide (KI) (solution vs. tablet) was evaluated with excretions of urinary iodine (UI) at Nagasaki, Japan, and it was revealed that there was no di...

In the presence of iodine at pH 5.0-6.0 a solution of pepsin absorbs iodine and the specific proteolytic activity of the solution decreases. The activity is less than 1 per cent of the original activity when the number of iodine atoms per mol of pepsin is 35-40. If the pH is 4.5 or less, iodine reacts very slowly and there is a correspondingly slower loss in activity. Glycyl tyrosine reacts wit...

A new method for patterning surfaces with organic structures, termed "dip-pen" nanolithography (DPN), has been developed. DPN allows one to deliver collections of molecules to a surface in a positive printing mode. The technique offers 15 nm linewidths and 5 nm spatial resolution. Current capabilities and future applications of DPN are discussed.
