The title compound, C(19)H(17)NO(3), was synthesized using a tandem annulation reaction between 4-benzoyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde and (E)-ethyl 4-bromo-but-2-enoate under mild conditions. The dihedral angle between the benzene ring and the indolizine ring system is 41.73 (4)°.

The title compound, C(18)H(15)NO(3), consists of an indolizine ring system and an aromatic ring. The two ring systems are not coplanar, the dihedral angle between the two being 54.26 (7)°. In the crystal, inversion dimers are formed by weak C-H⋯O interactions. These dimeric groups are further extended to form a regular two-dimensional structure by additional weak C-H⋯O inter-actions.

2-Aryl-6-cyano-7-methyl-5-indolizinones were successfully converted into 2-aryl-5-chloro-6-cyano-7-methylindolizines. The obtained 5-chloroindolizines readily underwent nucleophilic substitution at position 5 leading in high yields to novel 5-functionalised indolizines.
