Mathematical modelling provides a useful framework within which to investigate 4 the organization of biological tissues. With advances in experimental biology leading to increasingly 5 detailed descriptions of cellular behaviour, models that consider cells as individual objects are be6 coming a common tool to study how processes at the single-cell level affect collective dynamics and 7 determin...
In this paper the Immersed Boundary Method is presented, with some recent developments. The method is used to analyze fluid–structure interaction problems. Different aspects of the method are illustrated by applying it to blood flow in the heart and a flapping filament (flag-in-wind) problem.
Accurate modeling of atmospheric flows over topography plays an important role in the prediction of local weather in mountain areas and snow avalanche due to wind-induced snow redistribution. Large eddy simulation (LES) is a numerical technique in which only the large eddies of the turbulent motions are calculated and the net effect of the small eddies is modeled by a subgrid scale (SGS) model,...

Biological membranes contain many types of embedded proteins whose collective organization and functions depend importantly on the mechanical interplay with the lipid bilayer. We introduce new methods at the level of individual proteins embedded within the bilayer in a manner closely related to the Immersed Boundary Method [1, 27]. Our approach accounts for the bidirectional coupling between th...

A linear stability analysis is performed on a two-dimensional version of the \immersed ber problem", formulated by C. Peskin to model the ow of uid in the presence of a mesh of moving, elastic bers. The purpose of the analysis is to isolate the modes in the solution which are associated with the ber, and thereby determine the eeect of the presence of a ber on the uid. The results are used not o...
